YMCA Holds Free, Guided Night Hike July 26

The Summit Seekers, the hiking group coordinated by North Valley Family YMCA (www.ymcala.org/nv), has scheduled a night hike for Monday, July 26. The free, guided six-mile hike is open to the public. "Movies Under the Stars" in Conjunction with National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 3!
Be sure to join us for a free family outing at the next Movies Under the Stars, our series of free outdoor films in public parks on Tuesday Aug. 3 in Northridge Park. This event is in conjunction with LAPD Devonshire Division and National Night Out, a crime and drug prevention event in over 15,000 communities in all 50 states.

Now in its 27th year, National Night Out brings together citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, and community based organizations. It aims to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention, improve community/police relationships and support local anti-crime programs, and strengthen neighborhood spirit.

We will be screening "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," an animated kid-friendly film. We will have free picnic dinners (while supplies last), free popcorn, facepainting, and prize drawings. There will also be kids activities, Police vehicles on display, public safety information and more. Bring blankets, chairs and picnics. No alcohol, dogs or BBQs please.

Don't miss this great chance to get a sneak peek and guided tour of the historic Oakridge Estate in Northridge before it opens to the public, on Saturday, Aug. 14. 45-minute guided tours will be offered between 11:00 and 3:00 pm.

In December 2009 the purchase of the historic-cultural landmark Oakridge Estate was completed, known in the community as "Oakie House." The English Tudor style house in Northridge was designed by noted architect Paul R. Williams for actress Barbara Stanwyck in 1937 and was most recently the home of actor Jack Oakie and his wife Victoria Horne at a time when many movie starts lived in the Valley.

In May, the first meeting of the newly formed Park Advisory Board (PAB) for the Oakridge Estate was held. The PAB is made up of community stakeholders who will make recommendations for the future uses of the property to the Department of Recreation and Parks.

This is a "sprint" triathlon - and open to people of all skill levels. Councilmember Alarcon invites you to join the race as a participant, a member of a relay team or as a spectator! This is a great opportunity for families to come to Hansen Dam to enjoy a day at the park and to cheer on local triathletes!

Hosted by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Recreation and Parks and a number of other sponsors, the Hansen Dam Tri is one of the fastest growing and most exciting events in Southern California and is perfectly suited for all multi-sport competitors. Whether you are a novice or professional triathlete, this fun, fast and competitive event is a fantastic race to participate in!

The Hansen Dam Tri is a Sprint Triathlon that begins with an exhilarating 500 yard open water swim, then transitions into a scenic 11 mile road bike course with rolling hills, and finishes with a breathtaking 3 mile trail run through the Hansen Dam Regional Park. Demand for this event has increased and is expected to sell out.

YMCA Invites Families to Backpack in Mammoth, Aug. 18 – 21

Families looking for a short getaway this summer are invited to join the Summit Seekers, North Valley Family YMCA’s (www.ymcala.org/nv), hiking group when it spends four days in Mammoth, hiking, fishing and rock climbing. The outing is open to the public. All fitness levels are welcome. The YMCA will provide backpacking gear, lodging before and after the hike, trail guide, dry-fit t-shirt and meals, including a Saturday night BBQ.
