DESCRIPTION:The American economy is on the edge of catastrophe and futur
es are at risk. The Gordon family\, losing all they have worked for\, st
rive to preserve their trust in each other and in the promise of their n
ation. Written by one of the greatest twentieth-century playwrights\, Pa
radise Lost is a poetic\, humane\, and distinctly American drama that ex
amines the impact of money and greed on family\, business\, and love.\n
\nOdets considered Paradise Lost to be the favorite of his plays. First p
roduced by the Group Theatre in 1935\, the play voices the suffering\, h
ope\, and shattered dreams of a country in the throes of financial crisi
 s. Three-quarters of a century later\, Americans are still wrestling the
demons of nihilism and idealism\, charity and greed\, self-interest and
compassion.\n\nVisionary director Daniel Fish creates a bold new produc
tion of this powerful play that grabs hold of the American dream and ask
s if our optimism is a force for good or merely a delusion\, a means of
survival or one of escape.\n\nDates and show times vary. Visit the Web s
 ite for details.

SUMMARY:Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies
LOCATION:Bureau of Study Counsel\, 5 Linden St.\, Cambridge\, MA
DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20100310T080000
DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20100310T090000
X-MICROSOFT-CDO-ALLDAYEVENT:FALSE
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies is the lo
ngest continuously running course at Harvard. Taught since the 1940s wit
h constant updating\, the Reading Course is designed for people who need
to read more\, and more critically\, than ever before and who\, as a re
sult\, find themselves overwhelmed or disengaged. Based on the premise t
hat our learning depends as much on how we read as on how much we read\,
the course helps students read strategically\, selectively\, and active
ly.\n\nThe Reading Course can help you develop a greater range of readin
g rates and a broader repertoire of reading strategies so that you have
more choices available to you in approaching any text. Just as you would
not ride a bike at the same speed at every moment\, on every road\, for
every purpose -- or ride it in the same gear under all conditions -- it
does not make sense to read all texts\, of even all parts of a given te
xt\, at the same speed and in the same way regardless of your needs and
circumstances. The Reading Course enables you to gain a better sense of
control over your reading and studying and develop the flexibility\, jud
gment\, and confidence to apply different approaches for different purpo
ses\, thus increasing your speed of comprehension. \n\nThe Reading Cours
e also helps you apply the principles and practices of active learning t
o other activities beyond reading. For example\, you can apply active le
arning strategies to making notes\, preparing for exams\, and choosing h
ow to use your time and energy every day. Indeed\, approaching both your
learning and your life with a sense of purpose and engagement can help
you honor what matters most to you as a student and a person.

DESCRIPTION:Two university presidents – and two quite different views of
the future of learning. William J. Pepicello\, president of the Univers
ity of Phoenix\, and Christopher B. Nelson\, president of St. John's Col
lege in Annapolis\, Maryland\, will discuss their contrasting conception
s of higher education. The University of Phoenix\, the country’s largest
private university\, intensively promotes distance education and a for-
profit university model\, while St. John’s is the canonical example of a
great books\, liberal arts\, residential college.\n\nAs the sixth presi
dent of the University of Phoenix\, Dr. William J. Pepicello is responsi
ble for the leadership of the largest private university in the United S
tates. He holds both Master of Arts and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Lin
guistics from Brown University and a Bachelors of Arts in Classics from
 Gannon University.\n\nChristopher B. Nelson\, J.D. has been president of
St. John's College since June 1991. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from St
. John's\, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Utah College of
Law\, where he founded and directed the university's student legal servi
ces program.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:In the autumn of 1818\, the poet John Keats met a young woma
n named Fanny Brawne. Despite obstacles — both financial and tubercular
 — Keats and Brawne fell in love. Their relationship inspired some of Kea
ts' best known works\, along with some of his most poignant and beautifu
l letters. A new exhibition at the Houghton Library explores their relat
ionship and its legacy\, and includes a selection of Keats' letters to B
 rawne\, a lock of Brawne's hair\, Oscar Wilde's response to the 1885 auc
tion of Keats' love letters\, and more.

DESCRIPTION:Handel\, England’s greatest and most popular composer of the
day\, dramatically recounts the story of Jewish travail\, trial\, and t
riumph in his renowned oratorio\, Israel in Egypt. From the vivid detail
ing of the plagues to the hair-raising escape from Egypt to the jubilant
expression of triumph\, the oratorio stands as a milestone in dramatic
choral literature. With massive double choruses that drive the action\,
Israel in Egypt is the most choral of Handel’s choral compositions. Comp
leting this all-Handel program is Concerto Grosso in F major\, Op.3\, wh
ich captures Handel’s vitality and sense of ceremony. Join the Back Bay
Chorale\, led by Music Director Scott Alen Jarrett\, in its performance
of music that has endured for over 250 years.

DESCRIPTION:Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the patriotism of the
graduates and students of Harvard who served in the US Army and Navy du
ring the Civil War. Designed by William Ware and Henry Van Brunt and com
pleted in 1878\, the Ruskinian Gothic building is a dramatic example of
the architectural style of its time. Within it is Annenberg Hall\, a pri
vate undergraduate dining hall inspired by the great halls of Oxford and
Cambridge universities. Memorial Hall houses an impressive collection o
f paintings\, statuary\, and stained glass to which the public has limit
ed access\, so this tour is a rare opportunity.\n\nHarvard Treasures is
a new series offered to Harvard Art Museum members only that will explor

 — Keats and Brawne fell in love. Their relationship inspired some of Kea
