The Whole Backstage Children's Theatre is VERY HAPPY to announce Camp Broadway Kids 2010! This summer camp will center around all things Broadway and will give children the opportunity to experience theatre on a new level. The week will be a Broadway "Theme" where children will learn about "The Great White Way" What that is..and its influence on today's theatre. All classes --costumes, set design, acting, etc. will center around what you might see on a trip to the Big Apple!
Registration is open now! Class sizes are limited.

There is NO registration fee. Price for the weeklong camp is $130 per child with family discounts being offered. The cost of camp includes tuition, supplies, a camp t-shirt, and snack each day. If you have ever considered enrolling your child in theatre classes, but were unsure because of the commitment, this is the perfect opportunity to try it out!

Tony Brock is an artist/illustrator and graphic designer. He was employed as an artist at The Tuscaloosa News and, for the last ten years, has been putting his experience to work at Randall-Reilly Publishing, managing a staff of art directors and designing numerous business-to-business trade magazines for print and web. “The Birmingham Seven” (B7) will perform at 8pm at Little Willie’s, 2350 Fourth St. in downtown Tuscaloosa, the first Thursday of every month. The ensemble is a jazz septet comprised of some of the finest and most sought after jazz performers in the region, including professors from The University of Alabama School of Music. Their repertoire consists of transcriptions and adaptations from iconic recordings by artists such as Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Gigi Gryce, and Lee Morgan as well as original arrangements and compositions by the members of the B7 themselves. The next Art Night at Kentuck offers pleasures for all the senses. Two new exhibitions, pizza and gelato, live music, and a Raku firing combine to make Thursday, August 5, one to mark in your calendar.
Kentuck Gallery presents highlights from the loaned collection Inspiration/Transformation: 14 Photographers Respond to Ma’Cille’s Museum of Miscellanea. The opening reception will take place on Art Night, August 5, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until August 28, 2010.
An exhibition of ceramics by Joe McComb opens in the Kentuck Annex Gallery on Art Night as well. The Kentuck Museum Permanent Collection Gallery will also be open for viewing.
The Kentuck Gallery Shop is showcasing wearable art. Selected items from Kentuck’s jewelry collection will be discounted from 40 to 60 percent off original prices.
In addition to the opening reception, there will be live music, and a Raku pottery firing demonstration by Daniel Livingston in the Kentuck Courtyard. Art Night participants will enjoy fresh made bread and pizzas from the cob oven. Kentuck encourages participants to bring an item(s) to donate to the newest Kentuck mosaic.
For only $10, you can get gelato from Mary’s Cakes and Pastries and a handmade bowl. First come, first serve. All proceeds go toward Kentuck.
The 2004 exhibit, Inspiration/Transformation, was co-sponsored by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Kentuck Museum Association. The purpose of the exhibition was to present images by photographers who were inspired by and responded to the Ma’Cille’s Museum of Miscellanea, a museum dedicated to the lifelong collections of Lucille House. In 1998 the museum collection was auctioned off, but before the doors closed Kathy Bailey and Trudy Wilner Stack commissioned and curated this exhibit to capture the fascinating attraction that was Ma’Cille’s. Fourteen photographers traveled from Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, California, Texas and all part of Alabama to respond to the museum. Each photographer captured a unique perspective from the experience. The Kentuck Gallery exhibit will show photographs from Birney Imes, Richard Ross, and Wanrudee Buranakorn.
Art Night is the first Thursday of each month and celebrates the opening of all exhibits in downtown Northport galleries. Kentuck studio artists will host their monthly Open Studios for visitors to see works in progress, meet the artists, and see the actual workspaces where the artists apply materials, design, technique and equipment to the creative process. Kentuck Studio artists are Ann Betak, Steve Davis, Brian Evans, Kerry Kennedy, Justin Robinson, Karen Schlesinger, and Lackey Stephens.
Art Night is funded in part by a grant from The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa.

Hot Hundred Bicycle Ride

Cycle through the rolling hills in rural areas of West Central Alabama. Leave from historic Capitol Park at the end of University Blvd. in downtown Tuscaloosa and travel to remote Greene County. These lightly traveled back roads will take you through the small communities of Romulus, Jena, Mantua, Lewiston, Snoddy, and Ralph before joining Highway 11 in the Fosters community for the return ride to Capitol Park.

All riders will be supported with sag drivers, mechanics, route signs, road markings, maps, and rest stops. Rest stops will be stocked with ice water, sports drinks, fruit, cookies, and other snacks.

The rest stops will graciously be sponsored and staffed by volunteers from non-profit agencies.

The proceeds from the North Harbor Hot Hundred will be used for the benefit of the mentally ill in our community through the efforts of the Community Mental Health Task Force.

The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa County will present an exhibit of works by local artist Tony Brock, titled “Gassers, Ghouls and Gals,” in the Bama Theatre’s Junior League Gallery. The face of bluegrass music changed forever in 1979 when Doyle Lawson formed his groundbreaking band, Quicksilver. Their sound, which emphasizes smooth, intricate, astonishingly perfect vocal harmonies, innovative song arrangements, and stunning instrumental work, has been a model for countless progressive bluegrass bands of the 1980's and 90's. Among their awards are the Dove Award, 4 Grammy nominations and IBMA'a Vocal Group of the Year in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

The Greencards are a progressive bluegrass band that formed in Austin, Texas, and are currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. The band was founded in 2003 in Texas by Eamon McLoughlin, an Englishman, and Australians Kym Warner and Carol Young. The musicians originally performed in local Austin bars, and soon found increasing acclaim. They have released one independent album, Movin' On, in 2003, and two albums, Weather and Water, and Viridian, on the Dualtone record label. Their fourth album, Fascination, was released on Sugar Hill in 2009.
