The Find: Claiming Nelscott Reef -- Oregon surf documentary premiere

Portland’s Hollywood Theatre — 4122 NE Sandy Boulevard.
Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 7 – 8:15pm

Event Description: Local filmmakers premiere a film-noir surfing documentary about the conflicts, challenges and rewards brought on by the discovery of a giant, Oregon-coast wave. Reaching faces of fifty feet, this Oregon wave rivals notorious surf spots like Hawaii’s Jaws and Mavericks in Northern California. The documentary, written and directed by Portlander Erich Lyttle (Have You Seen Clem, Fire on the Track, The Ultimate Ride) is not your typical surf porn. It’s a universal exposé of the battle with overcrowding and limited access as well as a search for Aloha Spirit.
Cost: $5 at the door
Ticket Phone: (503) 281-4215
Ticket Web Link: www.hollywoodtheatre.org…
More info: www.nelscottreefthemovie.com

Brush Up Your Shakespeare

First United Methodist Church
1838 SW Jefferson St
Portland
Friday, November 20, 2009, 7:30 – 9:30pm

Event Description: Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets have inspired numerous musical creations. Weber’s opera Oberon was his last work before he died in London. The ravishing Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams, was written as a plea for peace during World War II. Verdi was drawn to Shakespeare’s understanding of the vulnerable human condition and Otello illustrates his mastery of dramatic theater. Elgar’s Falstaff is a virtuosic symphonic portrayal of the Bard’s burley rogue as outlined in Henry IV Parts 1 & 2. Actor Bill Barry recites salient passages before we perform the musical works.
Cost: $30/$25/$10/$5
Ticket Phone: 503-234-4077
Ticket Web Link: www.columbiasymphony.org
More info: www.columbiasymphony.org
