Women of the Chrysler: A 400-Year Celebration o f the Arts

This spring, as the Commonwealth of Virginia celebrates the role of women in the arts through the statewide initiative, MINDS WIDE OPEN, the Chrysler Museum does the same with Women of the Chrysler: A 400-Year Celebration of the Arts, an extraordinary new exhibition dedicated to the works of women artists – all of them drawn from our permanent collection.

This expansive show fills both the Large and Small Changing Galleries with more than 150 works by women painters, sculptors, photographers, silversmiths, glass artists, and printmakers—from Harriet Cany Peale, Mary Cassatt, Käthe Kollwitz, and Dorothea Lange, to Diane Argus, Louise Nevelson, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Cappy Thompson. The exhibition traces the course of women’s ever-expanding contributions to the arts in Europe, America, and eventually the world through four chronological sections and three centerpiece installations, which are on view from March 24 to July 28.

Photographer Dawoud Bey spent five years traveling to high schools across the country photographing teens from across the economic, racial, and ethnic spectrum. Class Pictures presents 40 of his large-as-life photographs on view at the Chrysler Museum of Art March 26 to August 6 in the Frank Photography Gallery.

Each portrait is accompanied by a commentary in which the sitters describe themselves and their lives. The result is a touching, funny, and sometimes harrowing portrait of American youth at the dawn of the 21st century.

Campers will begin each day feeding and caring for horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens! They will learn basic health care, clean up, and each animal's distinct personality. Next, it is off to the garden. Campers will do it all: start seeds, plant in the garden, harvest vegetables, and even pull a few weeds! When was the last time your child walked a goat on a leash or got to give a horse a bath? How many children get to go on a treasure hunt in search of peacock feathers, blue chicken eggs, a sheep without wool, and a Jenny named Jack? Each Day at farm camp will be different. The next day's afternoon may include digging up worms and fishing or taking a horse back riding lesson. That's life on a farm. We invite your child to come out and enjoy a week or two with us.

In life, we all need a boost here and there to keep us going. What we are offering at Cheryl Restaurant is a boost for the people that are in a great financial difficulty. We would like to help ten families with Free Meals at our restaurant once a day every day until they get a job. There is nothing we want in return but to make sure the hunger is filled. We hope to at least remove one worry out of the many challenges they have to face.

It will happen as long as God chooses to allow us to help.

Cool It! At The Chrysler

The Chrysler Museum of Art presents Cool It!, a weekly concert series every Thursday in July. This year’s series, sponsored by For Art’s Sake, the Museum’s support group for young professionals, links the music to art in the Chrysler collection. Cool It! offers a low-key gathering after a busy day at the office or a sun-filled day at the beach with popular local live music, refreshing drinks and spirits, and the chance to socialize with a diverse group of young professionals throughout the region. The galleries are open during this happy hour event mixing arts and culture to create a perfect summer evening. The doors open at 6 p.m., and last call for the cash bar is at 9 p.m. Admission is free for For Art’s Sake Members, $7 for Museum Members, and $10 for all others.

July 1 Lewis McGehee
Lewis McGehee’s aggressive approach to acoustic guitar has made him a prominent force in the Virginia music scene. He is a Richmond native and got his big break while making a name for himself in the New York’s Greenwich Village music scene. Lewis’ debut album on Lifesong Records was released worldwide. McGehee has performed with many national acts such as John Prine, Robert Palmer, Talking Heads, Christopher Cross, and Christine McVie. Lewis also completed a 15-city tour as an opening act for Bruce Hornsby. Portfolio Magazine’s Musician Poll voted McGehee as the top acoustic act for three consecutive years, and he was voted best musician. 9 Volt Magazine's local music awards named McGehee top performer of the year for 2000 and 2001.

July 8 Landon Tucker and Jonathan Rieger
This week catch the acoustic rock duo Landon Tucker and Jonathan Regier. These performers are college buddies and got their start by playing on the Virginia Beach boardwalk. Some of their influences are Coldplay, Dave Matthews, and Jason Mraz but they have created a unique sound all their own. They have a large following and they are known on the beach music scene playing at hot spots like Bonefish Grill and Catch 31.

July 15 Mercy Creek
The Chrysler Museum welcomes back Mercy Creek. The crowd loved their fierce performance during Warm It! in February, and we had to bring them back for an encore performance. Based in Virginia, Mercy Creek is known for their eclectic sound they call aggressive folk rock. Their style combines elements of world beat, rock, modern folk, and hints of bluegrass. The duo includes Cheryl Nystrom and Jim Ball who share their unique songwriting and dynamic performances with audiences throughout the Southeast. The duo has just produced their fifth CD, “Another Place to Start,” which has been listed on Paul Shugrue’s top list for 2010. The band has collaborated with producer Paul Mahern, who has worked with Iggy Pop, John Mellencamp, and the Fray.

July 22 Borderline Crazy Trio
Borderline Crazy Trio is the premier professional cover band of Hampton Roads. They have performed at a wide range of venues from colleges to national conferences. Borderline Crazy can handle a wide variety of requests that is sure to get the crowd going. Their roster of covered artists includes Led Zepelin, Blink 182, The Beatles, Phish, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys.

July 29 Muckrakes
The Muckrakes are a seven piece Alt-Americana band from Newport News. Formed in 2008, the band has quickly become a regional favorite. Their energetic live shows and original music has garnered them music nominations, praise from the press, and a dedicated fan base. The music features a wide variety of country instruments including the banjo, mandolin, and lap steel. They have a rustic sound and are inspired by diverse artists such as Dolly Parton, Leadbelly and the Cure. They are releasing a new live CD this month as well as a full-length studio album due out in 2010.
