 story of unions in Virginia and reflects their evolution over time\, fro
 m the last quarter of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. T
 he exhibition focuses not only on industrial actions\, but also on lobby
 ing by unions for improved pay\, benefits\, working conditions\, and soc
 ial legislation. A dozen small narratives encapsulate the larger story o
 f coal\, railways\, tobacco\, and textile workers. \n\nExamples include 
 the 1903 Richmond streetcar strike\; the 1976 bus drivers strike\; the 1
 886 Knights of Labor national convention\; the 1934 Danville and 1937 Co
 vington strikes\; the 1934 Tubize Chemical shut-down in Hopewell\; the 1
 977–78 Steelworkers campaign at Newport News Shipyard\; and the 1989–90 
 Pittston Coal strike.
