The Kentuck Museum Association invites the public to participate in its next a la cARTe event, March 20, 2010, from noon to 2:00pm in the Kentuck Annex in downtown Northport. The Capstone International features Japanese cuisine, culture, and craft, including a Raku pottery demonstration, a tea ceremony demonstration, Kentuck for Kids origami and calligraphy activity.
The newly opened Kentuck Annex is located at 1922 Fifth Street, directly behind the Kentuck Museum and Courtyard. The new exhibition space in the Annex will display Japanese art and artifacts provided by the Japan Program of The University of Alabama.
This month's featured food is a menu of Japanese cuisine prepared by Kentuck assistant program manager and foodie Lisa Blewitt. Sakura Raku Workshop

In cooperation with the Kentuck Art Center, this year's Sakura Festival offers a new way to participate in Japanese culture: creating raku pottery. The distinctive crackled finish of raku results from taking the red-hot pottery from the kiln and plunging it immediately into a medium that ignites, bringing serendipitous beauty to the finished piece. Participants will decorate hand-thrown pottery pieces prepared by Kentuck artists and work with the artists in firing and finishing the pieces. The usual participant fee will be sponsored by the Sakura Festival and includes one piece of pottery; additional pieces for decoration can be purchased at the workshop. The workshop is limited to 15 participants who must be at least 15 years of age; please call 205-758-1257 to reserve your place in class. Observers of all ages are welcome to attend at no charge. The event will raise funds to help the ABP continue their mission of promoting Alabama's rich blues heritage and passing it on to future generations through its award-winning blues camps and school programs, designed particularly to benefit at-risk children and underserved areas.

Kentuck Gallery presents recent work by fiber artist David Betak. The opening reception will take place on Art Night April 1, 2010 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. The exhibit will be on display until April 30, 2010.
David Betak graduated from The University of Alabama with a BFA in printmaking. He next studied textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology at State University in New York City where he founded the “dwb surface design studio.” His textiles are sold and showcased at the Maralyn Wilson Gallery and Kentuck Gallery Shop.
“I think of my textiles more as ‘wearable art.’ When dealing with textiles I recognize their practical functions but also think of them as a way to bring my personal expression into their creation. My inspirations have largely come from the work of twentieth century artists Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and the more contemporary, Elizabeth Murray.”

Kentuck announces Sheep to Shawl demonstrations by the West Alabama Fiber Guild April 10, 2010 from 10am to 2pm in the Kentuck Courtyard.
Kentuck invites the community to the Kentuck Courtyard for free demonstrations of historic fiber techniques such as shearing a sheep, carding the fleece, and weaving an original shawl.
The courtyard will also feature cob oven goodies such as fresh bread, pizzas, and baked vegetables.

Join us on April 24th for a casual event with great BBQ by the McAbee Pigfitters, silent auction, Hudson Poole's signature diamond event. The proceeds of the BBQ & Blue Jeans benefit the DCH Help & Hope Prostate Cancer Fund. This fund was established in 2008 to educate, create awareness, and help with screenings of Prostate Cancer in West Alabama. Early detection is the key to stopping the spread of prostate cancer, and the DCH Foundation is committed to raising awareness of this disease. For the third year, the Alabama Blues Project Spring After-School Camp students will showcase their talents in an end-of-the-semester mini blues music festival called the Blues Extravaganza. This year’s concert is presented by the Downtown Northport Merchants Association and will be an all-afternoon, free family-friendly event in historic downtown Northport on Saturday, May 1st.
The after-school Blues Camp brings Alabama’s rich blues heritage to the next generation of budding musicians and combines hands-on music instruction with a life-skills curriculum and blues music history. This year, over 60 Blues Camp students will be performing in three levels of unique blues orchestras: beginning band, intermediate band and the advanced band, which participated in the Blues Foundation’s 2010 International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase this January.
The Blues Camp students and audience will also be treated to performances by several esteemed Alabama Blues Musicians including Microwave Dave, Betty Fikes, Lil’ Ji…

Celebrate living longer and stronger with the Area Agency on Aging as we commemorate Older Americans Month 2010 on Wednesday, May 12th. This day will be filled with games, prizes, exhibits, free lunch and entertainment, and lots of fun, all planned specifically for older adults from throughout the West Alabama area. The theme for this years event is “Age Strong! Live Long!”.
This 23rd annual celebration will be held at the Bryant Conference Center on the University of Alabama campus from 9:00 am until 1:30 pm. The purpose of this event is to pay tribute to West Alabama’s older population and to create a community-wide opportunity to help them improve their quality of life.
