The Scientific Illustrator Is In: Losing Paradise

Professional scientific illustrators and digital artists -- using traditional and digital methods -- demonstrate how scientific illustrations are created. Today, meet illustrators Marilyn Aber and Harriett Warner and learn about the contributions that botanical art has made and continues to make to science.
Marilyn Aber grew up in a small New York State village, where she was a curious child who always observed nature. Since then, she has taken numerous art and art history classes and has traveled with sketchbooks and cameras in hand to document her interests. Her artistic accomplishments include a career in the graphic arts; designing and illustrating for publications; and playing in color pencils, watercolors, oil paints, pastels, macramé papier maché clay, and now digital media.
Harriet Warner received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 1974 from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in 1980 from Temple University. She taught art in a Philadelphia-area public school for…

The Scientific Illustrator Is In: Losing Paradise
Ongoing Tours & Activities
Professional scientific illustrators and digital artists -- using traditional and digital methods -- demonstrate how scientific illustrations are created. Today, meet illustrators Doreen Bolnick and Amanda Zimmerman and learn about the contributions that botanical art has made and continues to make to science.
In her earlier career, Doreen Bolnick alternated between working as a reference librarian when living in the United States and working as an illustrator when living overseas; her earliest assignments included doing pen-and-ink drawings for archeologists and anthropologists in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. She has authored, co-authored, and illustrated several nature guides. She is currently an art teacher at the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art & Illustration in Bethesda, Maryland.
Amanda Zimmerman became interested in scientific illustration as a youngster browsing through the color plates of her family’s encyclopedia. Not until much later did she realize she could do such wonderful…

Discovery Room
Ongoing Tours & Activities
The Discovery Room is a hands-on room for families with children and students. The room features activities using real museum objects and artifacts that allow visitors to explore the natural world at their own pace, guided by their own interests and sense of wonder. Visitors can look at fossils, skulls, shells, and minerals; use a microscope; try on costumes from around the world; and much more. Docents are available to assist and answer questions.

Forensic Anthropology Lab

(for all ages) The Forensic Anthropology Lab is a hands-on room where families with children learn that forensic science is far more mysterious and engaging than forensic fiction. Visitors use real human bones to identify and describe the gender and status of people from the past and draw conclusions about their lives.
