Lecture by Dr. Theo Parades
Arts and Museums
Peruvian anthropologist Dr. Theo Parades delivers a lecture entitled Kantupata, Beyond Machu Picchu. Kantupata, a small citadel in the cloud forest within the Machu Picchu sanctuary, was hidden by the jungle until 2005. The site is impressive for its sheer beauty and its
integration of architecture and environment. Its layout shows elements commonly found in Inca architecture: rectangular enclosures built around a central square, a plaza, a triangular main square below the ground level, huacas (sacred objects relating the site to the land around
it), terraces, and still-functioning water fountains.

Campus Peace Vigil
Campus Life
"STAND with ME-Members of Emory" began our campus Peace Vigil in 2006. We meet for 15 minutes every Tuesday during the lunch period (currently at 12 noon).
You can find us adjacent the bell tower of the Cox Hall food court on Emory University's central campus (in the rare event of inclement weather in the foyer of the Woodruff Library).
We are a single-issue campus group focused on protesting and reporting on the war in Iraq and keeping vigil in memory of the dead killed in the war. Most of our brief time is committed to a few moments of silence in addition to reading the names of U.S. military killed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the preceding week(s). While we continue to read this list we also invite more inclusive categories including Iraqi and Afghan citizens and other coalition forces involved.
Time-permitting we also share information, updates, and personal reflections. Participants are encouraged to bring banners, posters or appropriate music and are welcome to distribute fliers or leaflets (if…

The Challenges and Opportunities of Women's Leadership in the Church Worldwide
School of Theology
A lecture by Margot Kässmann, theologian, pastor, prolific author, and the former head of the Protestant church in Germany. Kässmann is an influential leader in the international ecumenical arena, where she has served for more than twenty-five years. Since her 1983 election to the board of directors of the World Council of Churches, she has broken age and gender barriers, including her 1999 election as the first female bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover. In 2009, she was elected chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, the governing body of that country’s twenty-four million Protestants. She voluntarily resigned as chair of the council and as bishop in February 2010 after a drunk-driving conviction. Described by the Berliner Morgenpost as “a remarkable personality: pugnacious, sometimes contrary, but always straightforward,” Kässmann is known for her administrative acumen, prophetic witness, and pastoral ability to resolve complex dilemmas of everyday life.

Staibdance, Vega String Quartet, and William Ransom: In Concert

Sharing the stage in the intimate Schwartz Center Dance studio, the internationally acclaimed Vega String Quartet, piano virtuoso William Ransom, and Staibdance will present an exciting evening of dance and live music. Emory faculty member and choreographer George Staib and his company Staibdance join the musicians of the Vega String Quartet for their second collaboration. In 2009 Atlanta critic Pierre Ruhe referred in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to their first effort as “magnetic, tense, euphoric.” Music by Chopin, Richard Einhorn, Schumann, Rachmaninov, and Emory's own Kendall Simpson will provide the foundation for the physicality, athleticism, and nuance that characterizes Staibdance.

Wondrous Transformations photography Workshop with Kathryn Kolb (Part 1)

natural world for sources of imagery. In this two-part

“Dynamic Korea: Song and Dance”
Arts and Museums
This 90-minute performance features 12 Korean music and dance numbers performed by 12 performing artists. Handed down from generation to generation, the movements of Dynamic Korea: Dance & Song reflect the essential rhythms of traditional Korean dance. The exuberant yŏtt’aryŏngch’um (Taffy Peddler Dance) walks audiences through the bustling marketplaces of Korea, while meditative, deeply symbolic performances such as the hwahyŏnmu (Lotus Dance) and sŭngmu (Monk’s Dance) explore the country's deep Buddhist roots. From the gentle, gliding grace of the opening chaech’ŏnmu (Chosŏn Court Dance) to the thunderous drumming of the closing p’unggo, the dancers and musicians of the Chae Hyang Soon Dance Company are animated by the strength and energy of the Korean tradition.
This event is provided by the generosity of the Korea Society. The Korea Society is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization with individual and corporate members that is dedicated solely to the promotion of greater awareness,…

Traces of the Calligrapher: Islamic Calligraphy in Practice, c. 1600–1900 presents elegant and masterful works of calligraphy alongside the finely rendered tools used to create them, such as inkwells, penknives, burnishers, and paper scissors. The accompanying exhibition Writing the Word of God: Calligraphy and the Qur'an brings to light key developments in the Islamic scripts from Spain to North Africa and to Greater Iran through a selection of folios from Qur'ans dating from the seventh century to the fifteenth century. “Steamboat Bill Jr.” Film Screening, with live piano accompaniment by Donald Sosin
Arts and Museums
“Steamboat Bill Jr.” stars Buster Keaton and was directed by Keaton and Charles Reisner. It was independently produced by Keaton and was released through United Artists in 1928. It was Keaton's last independent production, and when it failed to make back the large sums Keaton had invested in some of the most extraordinary special effects of his career, he moved to M-G-M, where he quickly lost creative control. Though the film failed to impress the likes of New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall (who suggested that the audience was as stone faced as Keaton) the film is today considered one of Keaton's greatest comic achievements. This presentation of “Steamboat Bill Jr.” is accompanied by Donald Sosin, one of the foremost silent film accompanists working today. The film is 71 minutes long.
