Tibetan Buddhism: Films From Around the World: Milarepa: Magician, Murderer, Saint
Films
In person: Greg Kruglak, executive producer
This is a vividly told story of Milarepa, the man who became Tibet’s greatest yogi, poet, and saint (and a major figure in the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism). In the eleventh century, young Milarepa falls into a world of betrayal and hardships. The greed of others upturns his privileged life, dropping him into a void of despair, humiliation, pain, and anger, and he sets out to exact revenge. Filmed on location in breathtakingly scenic Spiti, India, near the Tibetan border, it was directed by Tibetan Buddhist lama Neten Chokling (co-star of the hit film The Cup) and stars Jamyang Lodro and Orgyen Tobgyal (both featured in The Cup). Bhutan / 2006 / 90 min. / Tibetan with English subtitles.

In Person: Wanma-caidan, director
Presented in collaboration with the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital
“The place where the story took place is none other than my home village, where the mountains and waters have always haunted my dreams. I long to tell the true stories—in my own way—that have come up in my home village, to disclose the real looks of her, and to reveal the genuine conditions of life of the people there. What the film endeavors to depict is the unconscious change that has been going on under the surface of the seeming silence in the relatively secluded land, a reciprocal infiltration between tradition and modernism. . . .” —writer-director Wanma-caidan
Tibetan writer-director Wanma-caidan’s dramatic feature debut is a Chinese production filmed on location in the Tibetan village of Amdo (now in Qinghai province). The film follows a young lama who during the Tibetan New Year is assigned as an attendant to a seven-year-old Living Buddha of a mountain monastery. The boy…

Two Doctors and One Philosopher: Collecting Japanese Paintings in the Nineteenth Century
Talks and Lectures
The nineteenth century was a period of significant transition in Western understanding of Japanese art. Princess Akiko of Mikasa, a member of Japan’s Imperial Family, compares the Japanese painting collections of three highly influential collector-connoisseurs: Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796–1866), William Anderson (1842–1900), and Ernest Fenollosa (1853–1908). In her lecture Princess Akiko, who recently received her doctorate degree from Oxford University and wrote her thesis on Anderson, demonstrates how each of these collections not only reflects personal taste and historical context, but also traces how Western ways of appreciating Japanese paintings changed over the course of the nineteenth century.
This lecture is offered as part of the Freer and Sackler Galleries’ distinguished history of art research collaboration with Japan.

Tibetan Buddhism: Films From Around the World: Wheel of Time
Films
Master filmmaker Werner Herzog devotes his idiosyncratic passion and vast cinematic skill to discovering Tibetan Buddhism for himself. Herzog first finds the Dalai Lama at an assembly of half a million pilgrims at the place of Buddha’s enlightenment in India. The director then films a pilgrimage to sacred Mt. Kailash before he goes to Austria, where the Dalai Lama presides over an important ritual known as the Kalachakra (wheel of time) initiation. Herzog’s resonant voice-over enhances this beautiful exploration of Tibetan culture. Germany / 2003 / 80 min. / English and Tibetan with English subtitles.

From the World Cup in Germany to the remote Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, three students are on a quest that they hope will lead to wisdom in this documentary by Lesley Ann Patten. The catch is their teacher. Soccer-obsessed, charismatic filmmaker and “citizen of the world” Khyentse Norbu may be one of the most eminent Tibetan Buddhist teachers known, but it is a job description he slyly seems to reject at every turn. With music by Sting and an appearance by Bernardo Bertolucci. Canada / 2003 / 103 min. / English.

Nearly twenty years ago, director Ken’ichi Oguri spent over a year filming this remarkable documentary on location in a Tibetan village in Nepal. Films
In person: Tatia Rosenthal, director
This event is cosponsored by the Embassy of Israel.
Join filmmaker Tatia Rosenthal as she introduces and discusses her animated feature, which was based on short stories by best-selling Israeli author Etgar Keret and features the voice of actor Geoffrey Rush as a grumpy, freeloading guardian angel. In it, an unemployed twenty-something comes across an ad promising the meaning of life for just $9.99. In his zeal to share his discovery, he crosses paths with other residents in his apartment building, all of whom are busy on their own quixotic pursuits of happiness. “Enchanting . . . the screenplay by Etgar Keret and the director strikes just the right balance between quirk and simple observation” (Boyd van Hoeij, Indiewire). Intended for mature audiences. Israel/Australia / 2008 / 78 min. / English.

Korean Film Festival DC 2010: My Dear Enemy
Films
Unemployed Hee-soo (Jeon Do-youn, who won an award at Cannes for her performance in Secret Sunshine) tracks down her ex-boyfriend Byoung-woon to get him to repay a debt in this deadpan comedy from director Lee Yoon-ki (Ad Lib Night; This Charming Girl). What follows is a roaming battle of the sexes as charismatic, carefree Byoung-woon tries to charm the money out of various women in his life while the increasingly fed-up Hee-soo tags along. Lee’s incisive, dryly funny, and pleasantly meandering tale allows the complexities of their relationship to develop gradually as both halves of the couple come to realize what they love—and hate—about the other. South Korea / 2008 / 123 min. / Korean with English subtitles.

In this portrait of an artist as a young man, a loner living in an attic records his dreams of strange places and childhood memories in a book he hopes to publish one day—until a visit to his old hometown causes him to question whether this effort is worthwhile after all. Jeon’s first feature was selected for the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Korean Film Award in the Wide Angle section of the 1997 Pusan International Film Festival. In a small mining village in Kangwon province, nine-year-old Young-lim lives a financially limited but cozy life with her father, a miner, and her mentally challenged brother. Their happiness is interrupted when her father loses his job after a mining incident. Jeon’s most acclaimed film—it won awards at the Venice, Pusan, Deauville, and Barcelona film festivals, among others—is a “quiet wonder” (critic Neil Young, Hollywood Reporter) that effectively plunges the viewer into its rugged, forlorn setting and the interior world of its young heroine. In person: Jeon Soo-il, director
Titled after a French phrase denoting a time of night so dark that details disappear in front of one’s eyes, and set in an eerie, snowbound landscape, this film effectively conveys the uncanny feeling of being lost amid once-familiar surroundings. After leading a bleak, financially difficult urban existence, a filmmaker returns to his hometown after a twenty-five-year absence, where he meets a woman in search of her lost sibling. In their mutual wanderings and sense of loss, they develop an intense and mysterious attraction to one another. South Korea / 2005 / 110 min. / Korean with English subtitles

Korean Film Festival DC 2010: Himalaya, Where the Wind Dwells
Films
In person: Jeon Soo-il, director
While visiting his brother’s factory, recently divorced Choi (Oldboy star Choi Min-sik) agrees on the spur of the moment to travel to Nepal and deliver the ashes of a deceased worker to his homeland. After meeting the worker’s impoverished family, Choi finds it difficult to break the news to them or return to his former life. Jeon’s images of the Himalayas are as powerful as the drama unfolding within them. South Korea / 2008 / 95 min. / Korean, English, and Nepali with English subtitles
Part of the Jeon Soo-il Retrospective.
Over the past decade Jeon Soo-il has established himself as a distinct voice in Korean independent cinema, crafting films that resonate with intense emotion and a unique sensitivity to landscape. As film critic Neil Young put it in the Hollywood Reporter, Jeon makes “the kind of masterfully executed, emotionally impactful cinema that all admirers of the medium should discover.”
This touring retrospective was organized by Ciné-Asie, Montreal…

Korean Film Festival DC 2010: Dream
Films
Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi (circa 369 BCE–circa 286 BCE) once dreamed he was a butterfly. When he woke up, Zhuangzi famously posed the question of whether he was dreaming of the butterfly—or if the butterfly was dreaming of him. Korean cinema’s resident provocateur Kim Ki-duk (3-Iron; The Isle) creates a contemporary variation on this ancient conundrum with this hallucinatory head trip of a film. Japanese actor Joe Odagiri (Adrift in Tokyo; Sway) plays an artist who dreams of a car crash, only to discover that the crash was real and was caused by a sleepwalking Korean woman with whom he becomes entwined in increasingly bizarre ways. This “hypnotic exploration of fate, relationships, and control . . . has a way of sticking with you” (Simon Howell, Sound on Sight). Intended for mature audiences. South Korea / 2008 / 95 min. / Korean and Japanese with English subtitles.

Korean Film Festival DC 2010: My Friend and His Wife
Films
Variety film critic Derek Elley calls Shin Dong-il’s film “superbly honed at every level, with dialogue, performances, and direction meshing in a seamless, apparently effortless flow.” It tells the story of two old friends—one a single, ambitious businessman; the other a humble, married chef—whose lives are turned upside down by marital infidelity and personal tragedy. Shin’s film blends great acting, unexpected twists, and subtle but powerful camera work to create a compelling exploration of morality, ethics, and the fragility of human relationships. South Korea / 2008 / 114 min. / Korean with English subtitles.

Korean Film Festival DC 2010: M
Films
Lee Myung-se was inspired to make this psychodrama by a dream he had in which Alfred Hitchcock handed him a book titled M. Employing the hyperkinetic style that distinguished his previous films Nowhere to Hide and Duellist, Lee turns M into a study of rich, saturated colors and bright light alternating with inky darkness. These dazzling visuals function as projections of the feverish mind of a creatively blocked writer who starts seeing visions of his first love and cannot tell if she is real, a ghost, or the product of his imagination. Deliberately fragmented, Lee’s film is an absorbing mental puzzle that, like obvious forebearers such as The Shining or The Double Life of Veronique, innovatively exploits cinematic aesthetics to put the audience inside a mind slipping into madness. South Korea / 2007 / 110 min. / Korean with English subtitles.

Korean Film Festival DC 2010: Rough Cut
Films
Written by Kim Ki-duk, Jang Hun’s action-packed film provides a fresh twist on the gangster movie genre. After severely beating his co-star during a filmed fight scene, movie star Soo-ta offers the role to Gang-pae, an actual gangster and aspiring thespian. Gang-pae accepts, but with one condition: the fights in the movie must be real. Their tumultuous love-hate relationship teaches both men about the limits of friendship, while the gulf between playing a gangster and actually being one becomes apparent in the film’s shocking conclusion. Intended for mature audiences. South Korea / 2008 / 113 min. / Korean with English subtitles.

Love transcends death in this “weird and wonderful” (Derek Elley, Variety) romantic fantasy about a college student whose crush keeps appearing to him even after she commits suicide. Told in flashbacks stretching from the student protests of the turbulent 1970s to the classroom of eager students where the hero now teaches, Hwang Qu-duck’s film hinges on a startling plot twist that throws perceptions of what is real and what is fantasy for a supernatural loop.
