Take an exciting virtual trip on board one of two simulators. Choose your adventure: Ride aboard the Space Shuttle to the International Space Station or experience the thrill of a flight in both vintage and jet-age aircraft. Note: Ride Simulators accommodate up to 8 people per ride. For safety reasons, children must be 42 inches tall unless accompanied by an adult.
• Interactive Flight Simulators: (approximately 6 min.)
Try to become a jet combat "ace" -- in an F-4 Phantom II -- as you pilot the simulator into 360-degree barrel rolls. Choose either pilot or gunner responsibilities. Note: Interactive Flight Simulators accommodates 1 to 2 people per ride. For safety reasons, children must be 48 inches tall.

One-Time Events
The Smithsonian 44th annual Kite Festival will showcase craft in flight, beauty in the air, and the art of making kites soar.
Be it a diamond or delta, box-kite or rokkaku, honor the art of kite making with color, creativity, and, of course, craft. The possibilities are endless, so stretch your imagination, push the limits, have fun, and be crafty! Whatever you end up creating, please make sure that in order to enter into the competition all kites must fly according to AKA specifications.
Note: Registration from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. To enter, contestants must have made their own kites, which must be capable of flying at a minimum altitude of 100 feet for approximately 1 minute.

• 7:30 PM: Meet the lecturer for a question-and-answer session.
• 8:00 PM: Mars is a vast cold desert whose red surface is swept by winds, especially in the summer, in storms enveloping the entire planet. Spacecraft that have visited Mars in the last decade have observed the effects of the Martian winds, including dust storms; vast fields of sand dunes; wind-sculpted hills; active dust devils; and features that change their shape with time, serving as local “wind vanes.” This evening, Ronald Greeley (School of Earth and Space Exploration, Arizona State University, and principal investigator, Planetary Aeolian Laboratory, NASA-Ames Research Center) discusses the awesome power of the wind and shows remarkable images from multiple Mars missions.

One-Time Events
Forty years after Apollo 13, hear the real history of this "successful failure" from the men who lived it. This evening, Jim Lovell (Apollo 13 mission commander), Fred Haise (lunar module pilot), Ken Mattingly (Apollo 16 command module pilot) , and Gene Kranz (mission controller) discuss the explosion aboard the Apollo 13 service module that forced the crew to abandon the lunar landing and the dramatic rescue plan that brought the three astronauts safely back to Earth.
Note: The speakers will not be signing autographs at the lecture.

• Ride Simulators: (approximately 5 min.)
Take an exciting virtual trip on board one of two simulators. Choose your adventure: Ride aboard the Space Shuttle to the International Space Station or experience the thrill of a flight in both vintage and jet-age aircraft. Note: Ride Simulators accommodate up to 8 people per ride. For safety reasons, children must be 42 inches tall unless accompanied by an adult.
• Interactive Flight Simulators: (approximately 6 min.)
Try to become a jet combat "ace" -- in an F-4 Phantom II -- as you pilot the simulator into 360-degree barrel rolls. Choose either pilot or gunner responsibilities. Note: Interactive Flight Simulators accommodates 1 to 2 people per ride. For safety reasons, children must be 48 inches tall.

• 7 PM: Big Blue Sky (2008, produced by Bill Liscomb) This feature-length documentary features vintage film and music to tell the story of the first extreme sport, hang gliding.
• 8 PM: Bill Liscomb, a pioneer of modern hang gliding, shares the story of hang gliding’s birth along the coast of California in the 1970s. Liscomb flew his homemade designs at the early meets and today describes both the technology and the culture of hang gliding.
