Exhibit "Private Eyes: Amateur Works from The Kinsey Institute Collection"
Private Eyes: Amateur Works from The Kinsey Institute Collection explores the unique characteristics of homemade erotic artifacts. These one-of-a-kind items include drawings, paintings, carved figures, handmade cards, scrapbooks, fabric crafts, and altered coins from The Kinsey Institute’s permanent collection of art. These “artworks” spanning the naively playful to the transgressive, were intended for private consumption and created with specific individuals in mind, unlike mass-produced, commercially distributed pornography. To date, these materials have received scant scholarly or sociological attention, and The Kinsey Institute is displaying the majority of these items for the first time.
Private Eyes will be on view in The Kinsey Institute Gallery from January 25 through April 2, 2010. This event is free and open to the public. The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm weekdays. Admission is free. Visitors should be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or g…

The End of Suburbia
The End of Suburbia, Wed March 17, 7-9 PM
Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.
But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

Multiple-Grammy Award winner Yo-Yo Ma, considered the world's finest cellist, brings his rich, smooth tones and signature phrasing to Bloomington this spring with a recital that should not be missed.
One of the best-selling recording artists in classical music, Yo-Yo Ma's discography contains more than 75 albums (including 15 Grammy Award winners) that reflect his expansive interests and range.
His successful recordings often defy categorization, among them Hush with Bobby McFerrin, and Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey with Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer. His most recent recordings include Paris: La Belle Époque, with pianist Kathryn Stott; Appassionato, which contains some of the world's most romantic music; and New Impossibilities, a live album recorded with the Silk Road Ensemble and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Czech Film Series 2009-10: Cozy Dens
A well known comedy-drama Pelíšky (Jan Hrebejk, 1999) is set in the Prague suburbs over two close periods of time, Christmas 1967 and the days leading up to the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia on 21 August 1968. Šebek is a high-ranking military commander who is fiercely loyal to the Communist regime, whilst Kraus, his neighbor, is a veteran of the resistance and a true Czech patriot. In this ironic take on the Czech society during this dramatic period, both are made to look equally ridiculous. In the meantime their teenage kids fall in love, listen to Beatles and do other things foreign to their parents.

Bloomington Turkish Film Festival: "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul"
The documentary digs deeper into Istanbul's musical and social history. It begins when Alexander Hacke, bassist for German avant-everthing band Einsturzende Neubauten, worked on Head-On's soundtrack and was bewitched by the local sounds. The camera follows him on his return trip as he records every tune he stumbles over. In briskly edited sequences peppered with fascinating found footage, each genre embodied in Istanbul is tightly linked to a neighborhood. The grunge kids ape Nirvanain gentrirying Beyoglu, hip-hop takes baby steps in quaint Kadikoy, and clarinetist Selim Sesler drops jawa in a rural bar in Kesan, a city ...There is a general fear among the subjects in the documentary that local traditions are dying amid the rush to modernization. This uncertainty is captured by pop music icon Sezen Aksu in her command performance of "Memories of Istanbul" evoking the city's rapidly disappearing past with impossibly noble resignation.
Cost: Free. Directed By: Fatih Akin. Cast: Alexander Hacke, Baba Zula, Orient Expressions, Duman, Replikas, Erkin Koray, Ceza, Istanbul Style Breakers, Mercan Dede, Selim Sesler, Brenna MacCrimmon, Siyasiyabend, Orhan Gencebay, Muzeyyen Senar, Sezen Aksu. MPAA Rating: Not Rated.

Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash
Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash, Tues April 6, 7-9PM
“The Age of Oil — 100-plus years of astonishing economic growth made possible by cheap, abundant oil — could be ending without our really being aware of it. Oil is a finite commodity. At some point even the vast reservoirs of Saudi Arabia will run dry. But before that happens there will come a day when oil production ‘peaks,’ when demand overtakes supply (and never looks back), resulting in large and possibly catastrophic price increases that could make today's $80-a-barrel oil look like chump change. Unless, of course, we begin to develop substitutes for oil. Or begin to live more abstemiously. Or both. The concept of peak oil has not been widely written about. But people are talking about it now. It deserves a careful look — largely because it is almost certainly correct.” Semple concludes: “These [are] not doomsday scenarios from conspiracy theorists, but hard scientific facts backed by serious research.”.
