Bloomington Turkish Film Festival: "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul"

The documentary digs deeper into Istanbul's musical and social history. It begins when Alexander Hacke, bassist for German avant-everthing band Einsturzende Neubauten, worked on Head-On's soundtrack and was bewitched by the local sounds. The camera follows him on his return trip as he records every tune he stumbles over. In briskly edited sequences peppered with fascinating found footage, each genre embodied in Istanbul is tightly linked to a neighborhood. The grunge kids ape Nirvanain gentrirying Beyoglu, hip-hop takes baby steps in quaint Kadikoy, and clarinetist Selim Sesler drops jawa in a rural bar in Kesan, a city ...There is a general fear among the subjects in the documentary that local traditions are dying amid the rush to modernization. This uncertainty is captured by pop music icon Sezen Aksu in her command performance of "Memories of Istanbul" evoking the city's rapidly disappearing past with impossibly noble resignation. Cost: Free. Directed By: Fatih Akin. Cast: Alexander Hacke, Baba Zula, Orient Expressions, Duman, Replikas, Erkin Koray, Ceza, Istanbul Style Breakers, Mercan Dede, Selim Sesler, Brenna MacCrimmon, Siyasiyabend, Orhan Gencebay, Muzeyyen Senar, Sezen Aksu. Exhibit "Private Eyes: Amateur Works from The Kinsey Institute Collection"

Private Eyes: Amateur Works from The Kinsey Institute Collection explores the unique characteristics of homemade erotic artifacts. These one-of-a-kind items include drawings, paintings, carved figures, handmade cards, scrapbooks, fabric crafts, and altered coins from The Kinsey Institute’s permanent collection of art. These “artworks” spanning the naively playful to the transgressive, were intended for private consumption and created with specific individuals in mind, unlike mass-produced, commercially distributed pornography. Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash

Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash, Tues April 6, 7-9PM “The Age of Oil — 100-plus years of astonishing economic growth made possible by cheap, abundant oil — could be ending without our really being aware of it. Oil is a finite commodity. At some point even the vast reservoirs of Saudi Arabia will run dry. But before that happens there will come a day when oil production ‘peaks,’ when demand overtakes supply (and never looks back), resulting in large and possibly catastrophic price increases that could make today's $80-a-barrel oil look like chump change. Unless, of course, we begin to develop substitutes for oil. Or begin to live more abstemiously. Or both. The concept of peak oil has not been widely written about. But people are talking about it now. It deserves a careful look — largely because it is almost certainly correct.” Semple concludes: “These [are] not doomsday scenarios from conspiracy theorists, but hard scientific facts backed by serious research.”.
