Beowulf - A Thousand Years of Baggage
Theater
Digging into the roots of the original epic poem, this club-style SongPlay hearkens back to the raw and rowdy style of storytelling in the old Scandinavian mead halls – with a passion for fierce poetry and a pint of thick beer. Monsters and professors collide in blood-soaked Scandinavia as this hefty poem is rescued from 1,000 years of analysis and transformed into a defiantly raucous dissertation on art and violence. With a 7-piece band, including dueling trombones, bass clarinet, accordion and saw, BEOWULF combines Weillian cabaret, 40's jazz harmony, indie rock, punk, electronica, and Romantic lieder into a cacophonous swirl.
Suitable for ages 14+, contains strong to mild language and scenes of mature content.

Architecture's Infestations: Housing Renewal and Pest Control in 1930s London"
Art/Design
How did infestations of vermin influence housing transformation in early 20th century London? This paper centers on the slum clearance and flat building programs instigated by the radical St Pancras House Improvement Society in the 1920s and '30s. The discussion focuses on the actual presence of vermin in the slums, and the representation of certain pests — notably bed bugs — in the society's strikingly experimental propaganda campaigns. Visual and documentary archival analysis reveals tensions between the material presence and consequences of infestations, and the symbolic currency of verminous metaphors within the discourses of urban change.

Paramahamsa Prajnanananda - Integrating Study and Spiritual Practice: Kriya Yoga and its fulfillment of the desire for knowledge.
Humanities
Introduction by Professor Francis X. Clooney, S.J. Parkman Professor of Divinity and Professor of Comparative Theology and director of the Center for the Study of World Religions. Kriya Yoga, a non-sectarian meditation technique, has been practiced by the seers of the Upanishads, Shri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, Maharshi Patanjali in his Yoga Sutra, and many other masters through the ages. Ninety years ago, Paramahamsa Yogananda arrived in Boston, bringing this technique from India to the West. Join us for an engaging presentation by a current successor of this lineage and head of the Kriya Yoga Institute. Doors open at 5:30 PM. All are welcome. Shifting Ground: Peter Zumthor and the Urbanization of the Alps
Art/Design
Projects in the Swiss Alps such as the chapel of Sogn Benedetdg in Sumvitg (1987) and the Thermal Bath in Vals (1996) shaped the image of Peter Zumthor as a quasi-romanticist, anti-urban architect working in remote areas, far away from the hubs of modern life, in a seemingly untouched natural context. What if this image is wrong? Can an analysis of the economic context and the exploitation of the Alps in the late 20th century by the tourist and energy industry help to revise this image? Was Henri Lefebvre right with his prophecy of the "complete urbanization"?

Alfred Stieglitz - In-Sight Evenings: Looking Deeper and Differently
Art/Design
In 1969 the Fogg Museum received a selection of photogravures by the legendary impresario of American modernism, Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946). Drawn from the artist’s first portfolio of his own work, "Picturesque Bits of New York and Other Studies (1897)," the images signaled a critical sea change in Stieglitz’s approach to the fine art of photography, while their acquisition marked the advent of a new direction in collecting for Harvard’s art museums.
The In-Sight Evenings series features talks by curators, after-hours viewing of the galleries, live music, conversation, and refreshments.

Reading, Listening, and Viewing: Three Ways of Experiencing the Shahnama
Art/Design
The greatest epic poem in the Persian language, the "Shahnama" (“Book of Kings”) has inspired a rich oral tradition of dramatic recitation and a wide range of visual arts. This gallery talk will examine the works of art in the installation "Heroic Gestes: Epic Tales from Firdawsi’s 'Shahnama,' " exploring the techniques of expression that artists use to convey meaning and mood in a written text, an oral performance, and a painting.
This popular series considers objects from more than one point of view. The informal talks, many of them by Harvard Art Museums curators, conservators, and educators and Harvard University faculty members, are designed to stimulate thinking about works of art and encourage participants to explore their own ways of seeing.
Gallery talks are informal and include discussion.

Aesthetics & Astronomy Focus Group
Science
This focus group will study your perception of multiwavelength astronomical imagery and the effects of the choices in processing the data. The images come from a variety of observatories, including NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope, as well as the Very Large Array, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and others. Evaluation of such valuable data will benefit astronomy across the electromagnetic spectrum of astronomical images, and may help visualization of data in other scientific disciplines.
We will be providing food and drinks for the session and some beautiful souvenirs to take home.

The images come from a variety of observatories, including NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope, as well as the Very Large Array, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and others. DECONSTRUCTION/CONSTRUCTION: The Cheonggyecheon River Project in Seoul / The Tenth Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design
Art/Design
The Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design was established in 1986 on the occasion of the celebration of Harvard's 350th and the Graduate School of Design's 50th anniversaries, and to mark the visit of his Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, to Harvard and the GSD. The award is made periodically by the GSD for an urban design project larger in scope than a single building, constructed anywhere in the world during the previous ten years. Award-winning projects are selected because they make a positive and substantial contribution to the public realm of a city, improve the quality of urban life, and demonstrate a humane and worthwhile direction for the design of urban environments.

Sally and Cliff are faced with a choice: abandon themselves to pleasures promised by the cabaret, or open their eyes and face the coming storm. Singer and songwriter Amanda Palmer of Dresden Doll fame stars as the Kit Kat Klub's magnetic Emcee, presiding over the debauched party where nothing is as it seems, with A.R.T. regulars Remo Airaldi, Thomas Derrah, and Jeremy Geidt.
