Lisa Yuskavage: Visiting Artist Talk
Galleries
Lisa Yuskavage, one of the most acclaimed painters of her generation, creates sumptuous, self-aware, and boundary-pushing paintings that feature a familiar subject matter: female nudes, which have filled historical canvases for centuries. Yuskavage’s take on the female form, however, is colored by more contemporary depictions. Often employing fanciful landscapes or staged interiors and intense color palettes to portray her iconic distorted figures, she creates provocative paintings that elicit visceral reactions.

Trisitin Lowe: Visiting Artist Talk
Galleries
A life-sized sperm whale made of white felt, a bed that wets itself, a giant sci-fi Cyclops—Tristin Lowe’s (BFA ’90) sculptures delve into the abject and vulnerable, the childish and crude. His most recent piece, Lunacy, is a contemplative large-scale exploration of the moon carefully crafted out of white felt. Celebratory, critical, and self-deprecating, Lowe’s sculptures tap into social norms, fantasy worlds, underground culture, the carnival, and burlesque.

Not since the invention of the Gutenberg press, has a new technology so dramatically changed how we interact with the world, or how information is spread. Mobile smartphones have literally brought the world to our fingertips. In the next years we will be seeing developing nations gaining 4g access, intelligent location awareness, and augmented reality becoming parts of daily life. We are in the process of reinventing the book, changing how he we communicate information, and establishing new standards in visual representation. How we design and for whom is changing in leaps and bounds.

Bill Jacobson - Visiting Artist Talk
Galleries
Bill Jacobson’s early work – soft-focus figurative black-and-white photographs – often dealt with the AIDS epidemic. The blurred and poignant portraits evoked a sense of loss, and the futility of representing the scope of personality through still images. Over time, Jacobson shifted to color and took his camera outside, capturing the light washing over New York’s bustle and creating seductive Hopperesque compositions. Jacobson has been awarded numerous fellowships and residencies, including five at the MacDowell Colony.
