The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is organizing a number of training courses this winter. Classes include CPR, AED and First Aid training and Chokesaver for Restaurant Emergencies courses.

Runs daily through Nov. 20. This seasonal walk route includes the JFK Museum, the Cape Cod Melody Tent and the Kennedy Family Compound. The walk route passes through Veterans Park, home of the JFK and Korean War Memorials and overlooks Hyannis Harbor. Ask for the walk box at the Heritage House Motel front desk. The walk route is 10Km (6.2 miles). The trail is rated easy, suitable for strollers but not for wheelchairs. Leashed pets are welcome but clean-up laws apply. The Red Cross touches lives in our community every day through programs and services such as disaster relief and health and safety training. As an organization committed to helping the community, the Red Cross is honored to salute individuals who are making a difference through their actions.

Museum Opening Maritime Art Exhibit

The only fully furnished Sea Captain’s home open to the public on Cape Cod provides an intimate glance into mid 1800s family life in eight rooms. The parlors are arranged as if the captain was just returning from his voyage to China, likely 16 to 18 months duration. His gentleman’s study waits for him. His gifts of silk fabric, toys, porcelain, lacquered pieces and tea are displayed as well as maritime exhibits and costumes from the period. On exhibition from June 17 – July 18 the maritime paintings of nationally recognized artist Kenneth M. Evans will be on display. Docents from the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth lead continuous guided tours of the museum and relate lively stories of Yarmouth captains’ hair-raising adventures at sea. An 18th century cellar kitchen features an extensive collection of early cooking, lighting and household items.

Caitlin completed her senior year at the Massachusetts College of Art with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts in Photography and Art History. This summer she was enrolled into the Creative Residency program at the Parsons School of Art and Design in Paris. She has interned with several talented and knowledgable professional historians, artists and photographers. She hopes to apply to a number of prestigious graduate programs over the next two years. Caitlin wants to become a professor of photography at a college or university while continuing her work as a professional artist.

The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies will host an Art Opening and Exhibit entitled “Troubled Waters” beginning Friday, September 3, 6 p.m. at the Hiebert Marine Lab, 5 Holway Avenue in Provincetown.
“Troubled Waters” features the work of Elizabeth Leader, a mixed media artist inspired by human interaction with the marine environment.
The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of September to raise awareness about marine debris and its effect on oceans and the animals that inhabit them. “It’s the Real Thing” or at least some incredible simulacra in an exhibition featuring representational and photo realism The exhibit features three outstanding regional and nationally renown oil painters Sydney Bella Sparrow, Christopher W. Pothier, and Nancy DePew, and ceramicist Trisha Coates.
Styles may come and styles may go, but representational art never loses favor. We are fascinated by the skill required to achieve these images and by the magic cast by the illusion when painted by true artists.
On the surface the style addresses its subject directly. But in the case of the “It’s the Real Thing” trio there are stories to be found behind the figures and simple object.
Bella Sparrow’s direct, serene photo-realist images of spools of thread, flowers and fruit, set against grounds of worn wood speak to relationship and call to the viewer to be solved like Rorschach ink blots.
The same may be said for the more deceptively subtle images of DePew. Her delicate flowers depicted swaddled in shin…

The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, is once again looking for nominations for local Heroes. These Heroes will be recognized at the upcoming Ninth Annual Heroes Breakfast on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis, MA from 7:00-9:00 A.M.
The Red Cross touches lives in our community every day through programs and services such as disaster relief and health and safety training. As an organization committed to helping the community, the Red Cross is honored to salute individuals who are making a difference through their actions.
All Heroes must live on Cape Cod, Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard and the heroic act must have been performed between December 15th, 2009 and December 21st, 2010. The nominating committee will select the Heroes for 2010 in the following award categories but additional or different categories can be added if relevant:

Join us as we kayak Cape Cod’s largest barrier beach and salt marsh system and see for yourself why this is one of the state’s most impressive coastal ecosystems. Traveling the great marsh by kayak offers a whole new perspective on nature, and an intimacy with the tide. It also allows you to get into shallow waters, where larger boats can't go!
Launching from Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, we will explore the many tidal creeks and islands of the harbor, looking for shorebirds, osprey, horseshoe crabs and other creatures of the marsh. We'll also come ashore at the Sandy Neck barrier beach lighthouse. Barnstable Harbor can be windy and choppy. Weather may shorten trip – depending on conditions of seas and wind.
This trip is intended for those with previous kayaking experience, yet all experience levels are welcome. Participants will be required to wear a life vest.

The only fully furnished Sea Captain’s home open to the public on Cape Cod provides an intimate glance into mid 1800s family life in eight rooms. The parlors are arranged as if the captain was just returning from his voyage to China, likely 16 to 18 months duration. His gentleman’s study waits for him. His gifts of silk fabric, toys, porcelain, lacquered pieces and tea are displayed as well as maritime exhibits and costumes from the period. On exhibition from June 17 – July 18 the maritime paintings of nationally recognized artist Kenneth M. Evans will be on display. Docents from the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth lead continuous guided tours of the museum and relate lively stories of Yarmouth captains’ hair-raising adventures at sea. An 18th century cellar kitchen features an extensive collection of early cooking, lighting and household items.

A Benefit Concert for Outer Cape Health Services - Violinist Monica Huggett

On Saturday, September 4th at 3:00 p.m. Baroque violinist Monica Huggett will perform for the first time in Provincetown at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). Ms. Huggett brings with her decades of experience and an international reputation as one of the foremost baroque violinists in the world. Born in London in 1953, the fifth of seven children, Monica took up the violin at age six in order to differentiate herself from her piano-playing siblings. At sixteen, and as a student of the Royal Academy of Music, she was won over by the mellow quality of the gut strings and became a fervent champion of the baroque violin.
From age seventeen, Monica has earned her living solely as a violinist and artistic director – beginning in London as a freelance violinist – and currently as the artistic director of the Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Program.
