'Son of a Gamblin' Man': Identity on the Plains
Featuring Mari Sandoz's 1960 novel highlighting the life of Robert Henri, renowned artist in the early 1900s. Robert Henri was born Robert Henry Cozad--his father founded Cozad, Nebraska. Robert hid his father's checkered past along with his name as he made a reputation for himself in the art world. Sandoz' book, "Son of a Gamblin' Man," tells the story of Henri and his life on the frontier. Join us as we look at issues of identity, family, and art at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

The Henri Connection: The Museum of Nebraska Art presents Robert Henri
Mari Sandoz
Mari Sandoz’s novel, Son of a Gambling Man, is based on Robert Henri's Nebraska childhood and is the theme of the 2010 Mari Sandoz Heritage Society Conference. This exhibition was created especially for the Sandoz Center and this conference.
Robert Henri (pronounced HEN-rye) was born Robert Henry Cozad in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1865, he came to Dawson County, Nebraska at the age of eight. His father, John J. Cozad, founded the town of Cozad in 1873. A legal dispute with neighbors ended with a death and caused the elder Cozad to leave Nebraska in 1882 and the family soon followed. They settled in Atlantic City, New Jersey where John Cozad changed his name to Richard Henry Lee, and Robert and his brother posed as foster sons, taking the names Robert Henry (later Henri) and Frank Sothern.
Henri is best known as being the leader of the "Ashcan School” which pioneered realistic paint-ings and believed that artists should have free-dom of expression in art.

Red Desert, Green Prairie, Blue Sky: Photographing the West
Mari Sandoz
This exhibition brings together three photography projects that document the cultural landscape of the central western United States—southern Wyoming’s wild Red Desert, rolling green prairies of Kansas, and the blue sky of northwest Texas and eastern New Mexico.
