Freeman Butts exhibition
Art/Culture
Ten years following his death in 2008, the Freeman Butts estate generously offered to gift a selection of his work to six institutions in the state of Montana. Those institutions, including MAM, met several times with the trustee of the estate and made selections from the estate to better reflect Butts’ work already in their collections. This rich gifting of works is intended to more fully frame the artist’s legacy within the state. The institutions involved acknowledged no single institution in the state had the space or resources to accommodate the voluminous amount of Butts’ work. Therefore, all six institutions selected works to fill out their collections, made a commitment to feature the work, and generated scholarship about Butts’ influence. All six institutions agreed to lend and borrow the work with each other to further educate the public of the legacy of this important Montana painter. We are deeply grateful to Ray Campeau, Butts’ longtime friend, in helping facilitate this important gift. MAM is de…

Piano Workshop with Molly Morrison
Education
Molly Morrison, Missoula piano teacher and collaborative pianist, will present a workshop entitled “Let’s Become Better Readers” sponsored by the Missoula Music Teachers Association (MMTA). This Saturday morning workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. – noon, November 21st in the University of Montana Music Building, room 218.
“Let’s Become Better Readers” addresses the challenges of teaching music notation reading to a generation that lives in a fast-paced world of sound bytes. Aside from instilling a love of music, a teacher’s main job is to help students get to the point where they can learn music independently and explore their creativity from there.
The cost of this workshop is $20.00 (the workshop is free to members). The local MMTA association is affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). This organization serves independent music teachers by promoting professional development through continued education and collegiality and by providing opportunities for their students.…

MAM is de…

MAM is de…

Donna Loos: Silhouette Series
Art/Culture
MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”.

First Friday "Landscapes of the Mind in Reverse"
Art/Culture
Come enjoy Reverse Glass Paintings, Created by Nancy Rishoff. “This process involves painting on glass, (using acrylic paint) foreground to background and then flipping it over to see the finished process. This is new for me as I have been painting on canvas and paper for the last thirteen years. I ran across this process purely by accident, and found it to be fascinating. I have been painting this way for the last 6 months and have fallen in love with the effect, with happy accidents along the way. I am an Art student at The University of Montana and not afraid to try new art practices in my adventures in Art. I hope you in enjoy my show.” Please join us Dec. 4, 2009 from 5:30-7:30 PM for light refreshments at Computer Central for the opening night!

MAM is de…
