Let's Get Healthy! St. Helens Middle School
Education
Let's Get Healthy! is a popular interactive education and research exhibit now available for use at area health fairs. Attendees are invited to enroll as research participants where they learn about the research process and the quality of their own diet and body composition. Participants can contribute their anonymous health information to a population database that researchers can use to the scientific relationships among diet, body composition, genetics, and chronic disease. Communities are invited to use the data to develop programs and write grants that support healthy living in the community. Schools can use the data to conduct scientific inquiry lessons with their students, thereby allowing students to examine information like their own energy drink consumption use real, but completely anonymous, data.

Many parents today are experiencing the fact that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood (National Institute of Mental Health.) In his recent book, “What Causes ADHD?” Dr. Joel Nigg integrated a vast body of knowledge of ADHD into an understanding of genetic and environmental factors which may produce the disease, and framed the important research questions which need to be answered. Dr. Nigg is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the OHSU School of Medicine, and his research into this common but hard-to-understand condition will form the basis of this Marquam Hill Lecture, held…

Marquam Hill Lecture - Repairing the liver: Prospects for cell therapy as an alternative to organ transplantation
School of Medicine
Stem cells are “generic” cells that can produce exact copies and develop into specialized cells for organs and tissues, such as heart muscle or brain tissue. Stem cell research has long-term potential for development of treatments that affect disease on a cellular level, and holds promise for such diseases as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and Parkinson’s Disease. Part of Dr. Grompe’s research focuses on the development of cell therapy in the field of organ transplantation. While a limited supply of donated organs is currently the only viable option for patients awaiting transplantation, much effort is being directed towards using pluripotent stem cell therapy to repair damaged liver tissue. Dr. Grompe will discuss these and other issues in the final lecture of the 2009-2010 season. Dr. Grompe is currently a Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Molecular & Medical Genetics and Director of the Oregon Stem Cell Center.

Let's Get Healthy! is a popular interactive education and research exhibit now available for use at area health fairs.
