Providence Raptors, Photography by Peter Green

From the streets of Providence, birds perched high on downtown architecture may look like ordinary pigeons, but a keen eye and powerful lens bring the rare peregrine falcons into view. For over ten years, the fastest animal on the planet has patrolled the downtown skyline, protecting their territory and successfully rearing over 30 chicks. But the falcons are not the only raptors in town! in colder months various red-tailed hawks can be spotted. Contrary to urban legend, these birds of prey are not brought in by the local government to rid the city of vermin -- they are completely wild and reclaiming their territory. Peter Green is a photographer and graphic designer living and working in downtown Providence (http://www.providenceraptors.com). He walks the city, documenting urban wildlife from nesting robins to busy muskrats. His favorite subjects of all are the regal, powerful raptors who seem out-of-place yet perfectly-at-home amongst the bricks and concrete. Peter's show will run from September 5th through… Town/City (RI): Bristol. Categories: Nature ~ Outdoors. Organized by: Audubon Society of RI. Group Homepage: www.asri.org. Bird Count

Do you enjoy watching birds? Do you wish you knew more about the feathered friends in your neighborhood? Come join an Audubon naturalist for one or all of our series of nature walks focusing on the common birds found in Rhode Island. Sharpen your identification skills and practice using binoculars and spotting scopes. We will record the birds we observe as part of a national effort to catalog sightings with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. This important Citizen Science effort will lead scientists and educators to a better understanding of trends in bird populations both regionally and globally. Weather permitting. Swallows Spectacular on the Connecticut River

In Essex, Connecticut there are two spectacular avian happenings each and every year. The first is the spectacular concentration of eagles that join us to over-winter on the Connecticut River. The other highlight of the birding year on the river is the Tree Swallow concentrations that can be found each September and October. During fall migration, thousands of swallows congregate on the lower Connecticut River and at sunset settle in on a giant communal roost. The birds come from as far away as 25 miles and converge at dusk, often creating a "ballet" and "funnel" of birds before and as they settle down to roost. The renowned ornithologist and artist Roger Tory Peterson wrote, "I have seen a million flamingos on the lakes of East Africa and as many seabirds on the cliffs of the Alaska Pribilofs, but for sheer drama, the tornadoes of Tree Swallows eclipsed any other avian spectacle I have ever seen." Join us on a journey down river onboard the RiverQuest from Essex to see the spectacular display. Bring a picnic… Town/City (RI): Smithfield. Categories: Creatures. Wild Mushroom Walk

One of the highlights of our fall season at Kimball is our annual wild mushroom walk. Along the refuge trails we often encounter a truly amazing variety of mushrooms and other fungi, both delectable and deadly. After this year's wet spring, we're hoping for a fall mushroom bonanza, although with the New England weather it's hard to know what to expect. Town/City (RI): Charlestown.

Baltimore Checkerspot Butterflies: Evolution Unfolding

The striking Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly is native to the eastern United States. Not only gorgeous behold, they have a fascinating story. Historically, the caterpillars fed on turtlehead, a wetland plant, and the butterflies were relatively uncommon. But recently populations of these butterflies have been making the switch to a different host plant - common Ribwort Plantain. This has sometimes resulting in dramatic population increases. Dr. M. Deane Bowers of the University of Colorado has studied the Baltimore Checkerspot for over 30 years and will share her research and a unique perspective on evolution unfolding in our lifetime.

Armchair Naturalist: The 'Un-Huggables'

In the natural world, people tend to focus on what scientists call 'charismatic megafauna'. Massive animals like whales, cute animals like giant pandas, and fierce animals like eagles or lions get all the attention - and humans rally to the cry when their survival is in jeopardy. But what about the ugly, tiny and, dare I say, stinky animals? Aren't they important too? What about the carrion beetle, the skunk, the snapping turtle? Why should I care about tiny sea snails? Surely ticks and mosquitoes must be useless! Come and find out about these 'unhuggables' and how vitally important biodiversity is to ecosystems, medicine, and the survival of all. Rhode Island natives will be the focus but other species will be discussed as well. Town/City (RI): Smithfield. Categories: Creatures, Nature ~ Outdoors. Organized by: Audubon Society of RI.
