Hampton University's 32nd Annual Conference on the Black Family

Community Events Hampton University will host the 32nd Annual Conference on the Black Family on March 17-19. The theme for this year’s conference is “The Holistic Black Family: Mind, Body and Spirit” and will feature discussions on African American families in the areas of education, health and physical fitness and spirituality. Community Events The first exhibit in Virginia of works by master illustrator and artist Charley Harper (1922 - 2007) is at the VLM through April 25. The exhibit is centered around the personal collection of museum Executive Director Page Hayhurst and her family. It also includes student artwork and interactive art activities in Harper's style (tangrams, large puzzles, alphabet art table and rubbing stations). Harper was best known for his highly stylized wildlife depictions in "minimal realism," capturing the essence of his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. Tidewater Guitar Orchestra Concert

Community Events The orchestra is composed of traditional classical guitars, supplemented by soprano guitars, tuned a fifth higher, called requintos, and bass guitars, tuned a fourth lower, called bajas. One of the only guitar orchestras of its kind in the United States, the TGO has made numerous appearances locally and represented the United States at the International Guitar Festival in Costa Rica in October of 1999. Community Events This spring, as the Commonwealth of Virginia celebrates the role of women in the arts through the statewide initiative, MINDS WIDE OPEN, the Chrysler Museum does the same with Women of the Chrysler: A 400-Year Celebration of the Arts, an extraordinary new exhibition dedicated to the works of women artists – all of them drawn from our permanent collection. This expansive show fills both the Large and Small Changing Galleries with more than 150 works by women painters, sculptors, photographers, silversmiths, glass artists, and printmakers—from Harriet Cany Peale, Mary Cassatt, Käthe Kollwitz, and Dorothea Lange, to Diane Argus, Louise Nevelson, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Cappy Thompson.
