For the past several months, the Bower Center for the Art has worked with a group of local artists, business people and civic leaders to plan an exciting season of art exhibitions and accompanying programs. Under the leadership of the Center’s Interim Director Sara Braaten and Exhibition Coordinator Sandee Shaffer Johnson, the planning group has worked to showcase and be inclusive of the rich variety of local visual artists and crafts people. “We wanted to bring the collective wisdom of the established artists together with the enthusiasm and energy of the emerging artist and the entrepreneurial spirit of local art businesses. Among the various work included in the show are the large colorful oil paintings of African women by Pat Dougherty based on the photographs of a friend and missionary priest. Other works include Christian icons in the Coptic tradition of Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea by Patrick Ellis, abstract mixed media assemblages and painted photographs by Sandee Johnson, and playful wire-art bird…

Biggest Loser Program

The Biggest Loser Program is for people of all ages (18+) and fitness levels. This 20-week program is designed to teach lifestyles changes in nutrition and fitness and well as provide motivation to participants. The program will begin with health history screening and fitness testing. Participants will compete in teams of five and will work with a Certified Personal Trainer once a week, with additional personal training available at discounted rates. Team members will also receive goal setting, cooking seminars, nutrition seminars, once a month body fat testing, and team challenges.

ROANOKE, VA - Roanoke Parks and Recreation is looking for "Volunteers for the community forest" to participate in a Tree Steward program, designed to train volunteers to care for trees and teach others about the urban forest. The program is free of charge.
Volunteer Tree Stewards prune trees, conduct tree inventories, plan Arbor Day events, and educate homeowners. The course begins with 30 hours of combined classroom and hands-on training. An additional 30 hours of volunteer work will be required to complete the program. 20 hours of community service is suggested per year thereafter.

For the past several months, the Bower Center for the Art has worked with a group of local artists, business people and civic leaders to plan an exciting season of art exhibitions and accompanying programs. Under the leadership of the Center’s Interim Director Sara Braaten and Exhibition Coordinator Sandee Shaffer Johnson, the planning group has worked to showcase and be inclusive of the rich variety of local visual artists and crafts people. “We wanted to bring the collective wisdom of the established artists together with the enthusiasm and energy of the emerging artist and the entrepreneurial spirit of local art businesses. Among the various work included in the show are the large colorful oil paintings of African women by Pat Dougherty based on the photographs of a friend and missionary priest. Other works include Christian icons in the Coptic tradition of Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea by Patrick Ellis, abstract mixed media assemblages and painted photographs by Sandee Johnson, and playful wire-art bird…

For the past several months, the Bower Center for the Art has worked with a group of local artists, business people and civic leaders to plan an exciting season of art exhibitions and accompanying programs. Under the leadership of the Center’s Interim Director Sara Braaten and Exhibition Coordinator Sandee Shaffer Johnson, the planning group has worked to showcase and be inclusive of the rich variety of local visual artists and crafts people. “We wanted to bring the collective wisdom of the established artists together with the enthusiasm and energy of the emerging artist and the entrepreneurial spirit of local art businesses. Among the various work included in the show are the large colorful oil paintings of African women by Pat Dougherty based on the photographs of a friend and missionary priest. Other works include Christian icons in the Coptic tradition of Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea by Patrick Ellis, abstract mixed media assemblages and painted photographs by Sandee Johnson, and playful wire-art bird…

ROANOKE, VA - Roanoke Parks and Recreation is looking for "Volunteers for the community forest" to participate in a Tree Steward program, designed to train volunteers to care for trees and teach others about the urban forest. The program is free of charge.
Volunteer Tree Stewards prune trees, conduct tree inventories, plan Arbor Day events, and educate homeowners. The course begins with 30 hours of combined classroom and hands-on training. An additional 30 hours of volunteer work will be required to complete the program. 20 hours of community service is suggested per year thereafter.

For the past several months, the Bower Center for the Art has worked with a group of local artists, business people and civic leaders to plan an exciting season of art exhibitions and accompanying programs. Under the leadership of the Center’s Interim Director Sara Braaten and Exhibition Coordinator Sandee Shaffer Johnson, the planning group has worked to showcase and be inclusive of the rich variety of local visual artists and crafts people. “We wanted to bring the collective wisdom of the established artists together with the enthusiasm and energy of the emerging artist and the entrepreneurial spirit of local art businesses. Among the various work included in the show are the large colorful oil paintings of African women by Pat Dougherty based on the photographs of a friend and missionary priest. Other works include Christian icons in the Coptic tradition of Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea by Patrick Ellis, abstract mixed media assemblages and painted photographs by Sandee Johnson, and playful wire-art bird…

By recounting her own journey from drug abuse and bad relationships to a career as a writer, speaker, and cofounder of a nonprofit, she hopes to shorten for others what she calls "the path to the Divine." A justice reform activist, she is cofounder of the Brown Angel Center, a program in Charlotte, N.C. that assists formerly incarcerated women in becoming financially independent. "Inspired by Africa" Art Exhibit & Performances

For the past several months, the Bower Center for the Art has worked with a group of local artists, business people and civic leaders to plan an exciting season of art exhibitions and accompanying programs. Under the leadership of the Center’s Interim Director Sara Braaten and Exhibition Coordinator Sandee Shaffer Johnson, the planning group has worked to showcase and be inclusive of the rich variety of local visual artists and crafts people. “We wanted to bring the collective wisdom of the established artists together with the enthusiasm and energy of the emerging artist and the entrepreneurial spirit of local art businesses. Among the various work included in the show are the large colorful oil paintings of African women by Pat Dougherty based on the photographs of a friend and missionary priest. Other works include Christian icons in the Coptic tradition of Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea by Patrick Ellis, abstract mixed media assemblages and painted photographs by Sandee Johnson, and playful wire-art bird…
