David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) / Headlights @ Alley Katz
21 & over
$12 advance; $14 door.
TICKETS MAY BE PURCHASED ONLINE @ETIX.COM OR AT PLAN9 RECORD STORE IN CARYTOWN OR AT THE DOOR
DAVID BAZAN - http://www.davidbazan.com/
Though songwriter Dave Bazan fronts the enigmatic rock band Pedro the Lion, his emotionally charged narratives, eye for telling detail, and mournful voice have more in common with J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories” or Flannery O’Connor’s “Wise Blood” than with the usual lyrical slant of popular music. Bazan is a gifted storyteller, weaving parables of spiritual conflict, suburban ennui, and personal surrender into magnetic, well-crafted songs.
HEADLIGHTS - http://www.headlightsmusic.com/
awe at how deftly the band employs bells, organ swells, orchestral flourishes and stacked, co-ed “oohs” and “aahs” for instant indie-pop bliss. Occupying territory well marked by both predecessors (Lush, Stereolab) and contemporaries (Stars, Asobi Seksu), Some Racing, Some Stopping’s 10 tracks nonetheless stand out via good taste and attention to detail.

Jeremy Denk, piano @ Modlin Center
“Denk’s sheer technical control was staggering, and he plunged through the work as if mentally body-surfing….The sound he produced was even more telling: crystal-clear, cool and rainbow-hued. This was a moment to treasure.” – Santa Fe New Mexican
American pianist Jeremy Denk is one of today's most compelling young artists. In 1998, he took first prize at the Young Concert Artists international auditions and received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and his career has continued to flourish during the past decade.
The New York Times describes Denk’s playing as "bracing, effortlessly virtuosic and utterly joyous” and the pianist, celebrated for his virtuosity in a wide range of genres, has garnered comparable critical acclaim for his performances with leading orchestras and presenters nationwide. Denk has appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and many others…

Gorbel’s deceptively simple melodies, warm arrangements and soulful, soaring voice were always what drove The Honorary Title; his new, solo material brings those qualities into crisp focus in a way that makes the details even more beautiful. Tuesday January 19 marks the digital release of “Ten Years Older” Jarrod Gorbel’s first solo EP which was previously made available on the final Honorary Title tour. The collection was recorded this past August in New York and is a taste of what is to come with his first full length solo album Devil’s Made A New Friend, which is being recorded in Los Angeles with producer Blake Sennett, formerly of Rilo Kiley and the Elected.

The Nighthawks at Shenanigan's
The Nighthawks - http://www.thenighthawks.com/
Over the last 30+ years, The Nighthawks have earned a reputation as one of the best and hardest working bands around. They have gotten their widest acclaim for being one of the first and best white boy blues bands of their generation, and for putting on a great live show. But their acclaim and accomplishments go far beyond that.
They are among the top musical acts to come out of the Washington, D.C. area—and are still based there. They were a roots rock band before there was such a thing as “roots rock.” They play a wide variety of music that has appeal to a diverse audience, mixing the blues, rock and soul—along with rockabilly and swing.

Come relax and listen inside a home nestled on Hanover Avenue!Donations will be graciously accepted. Door at 7pm, Show at 8pm.
South China from Biddeford, Maine creates music that feels "sparse and improvised, evoking a slightly dark and dream-like state, like trying to recall something that is just beyond the edges of memory. They draw listeners into their intimate world of Maine winters, bittersweet moments, subtle humor, and the bizarre dream imagery."

Former Richmond native Brice Woodall (Chicago) and his band Brice Woodall & the Positrons will be in town to release their latest EP “A Tiny Gleam of Light”. Woodall and the Positrons will also be recording their next full length album in Richmond at The Basement Studio and will be spinning some of their new songs on WRIR 97.3FM April 3 from 1pm-3pm.
A recent review of Brice’s Chicago performance -
“Bearded and beanied Brice Woodall emerged and without preface began weaving subtle electronic melodies into the atmosphere. His ethereal falsetto trailed over the synthesized walls of sound. Occasionally Woodall would sling his guitar over his shoulders and build chords over the ambience – never anything to disrupt the mood established by the keyboard, but adding just enough structure to build the songs up from their haunting primordial waves. Also a masterful whistler, Woodall ended up sounding a good deal like Andrew Bird
in space. Just being nearby felt like levitating across…

Earthy roots numbers entwined with scorching rock, funk, reggae and heart wrenching ballads that feel like they echoed down from the ancient hills that stretch across their home state and reach as far north at New York and Canada and wander down into the deep, warm heart of Dixie. The roots of those mountains run deep in their music, drawing from so many genres that they create something transcendant. Moossa is ecclectic for sure - coherent, edgy and yes – cool.

The Heavy Pets are five South Florida musicians renowned for their explosive live performances and catchy original tunes that showcase a unique rock-fusion. The debut album launched THP to the most played independent act on XM/Sirius' Jam_On station. Their contagious stage presence has made The Heavy Pets festival favorites at Bonnaroo, moe.down, Langerado, NO's Jazzfest and PetZoo! created in their namesake.
Called "a living, breathing, force of nature" by Dan Sweeny of Relix magazine, The Heavy Pets are a gateway along a musical journey crammed with hot electric licks, multi-climactic instrumental solos and fantastical lyrics, revealing inspired philosophical leanings.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater @ Carpenter Theater
Presented by the Modlin Center.
“The Ailey dancers are known for their virtuosic technique, explosive movement, and limber physiques, with loose-jointed extensions that scrape the ceiling. They nail the blistering spins, the jump turns that corkscrew midair, the leaps that seem to sail on a breeze. It's a polished, spirited performance.” – Boston Globe
For the first time in its 50-year history, the acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater brings its dazzling artistry to Richmond. Founded in New York City in 1958, the Ailey Company, known as “America’s Cultural Ambassadors,” has forever changed the perception of American dance. The ensemble, now led by artistic director Judith Jamison, has performed for an estimated 21 million people in 48 states and in 68 countries on six continents, including two historic residencies in South Africa.

Oil fuels war. Greed is good. Sound familiar? The Madwoman of Chaillot is a delicious fable about filthy-rich and corrupt wheeler-dealers who think they have discovered oil under the heart of Paris.

This internationally acclaimed satiric comedy by Jean Giraudoux, written during the Nazi occupation of Paris, is a surprisingly timely play. Venture capitalists trample over rich and poor alike. Oil fuels war. Greed is good. Sound familiar? The Madwoman of Chaillot is a delicious fable about filthy-rich and corrupt wheeler-dealers who think they have discovered oil under the heart of Paris.
They're willing to destroy the city to harvest the black gold. But their plans are foiled by a marvelously eclectic band of Bohemians, beggars and slightly daffy street-folk. An incredibly funny and moving play filled with hope and light, and with a very contemporary bite!

"Classic soul and R&B styles have been revitalized in recent years by a cadre of young and relatively young artists such as James Hunter, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, and Sharon Jones. You can include John Németh on any list of the best of them." - Philadelphia Inquirer, Feb 2009
"Németh is not only the fastest rising star on the national blues scene, he may be the best white blues singer in the history of the genre." - East Bay Express, Feb 2009
"You could swear he was freeze-dried in the 1960s, as the music has a driving, rock-'n'-soul punch that makes him seem spiritual kin to long-gone stompers Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and Jackie Wilson."
Jonathan Takiff - Philadelphia Daily News, Feb 2009
"Nemeth has been bringing in new fans by the bushel. With his pleasingly gruff soul vocals and searing harmonica work, Nemeth is the fastest rising star in the blues firmament, a supremely versatile performer who has made true believers of some of the biggest na…
