Tombs / Javalina / Howl @ Plaza Bowl
• Tombs - http://www.myspace.com/tombsbklyn
Brooklyn's TOMBS deliver a stunning tour-de-force with their Relapse Records debut Winter Hours. The trio tread a unique musical path that draws equally from several disparate music worlds. The austere and appropriately-titled album is a somber, sobering affair that brings together hypnotic psychedelic harmonies, lush and introspective sonic textures, and a relentless intensity found in the most blackened metal to stunning effect.

When the tiny baby boy echoed his first cry on August 22 in Waterhouse, Kingston Jamaica, it was no ordinary sound but a symbol of great things to come. A revolution was on the verge for the dancehall industry on that day when Moses Davis a.ka. Beenie Man was born. He is the youngest artiste to have ever entered the thriving dancehall business in the early 80’s at the age of 10 and to rock the microphone like any veteran.
While ordinary children would be busy playing football, marble games and other childhood indulgences, Beenie Man was having studio sessions and writing songs, this was a clear indication that Beenie man would eventually become a fixture in the entertainment industry.

Presented by the Modlin Center.
An Irish-American Experience through music, dance and film.
“Eileen is to Irish music as Michael Flatley is to Irish dance—a pioneer, an innovator, a universalist….” – Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt
Paying homage to the rich and tireless passage of the native Irish people from Ireland to Canada and the United States, Eileen Ivers has created “Beyond the Bog Road,” an all-star assemblage of Irish and traditional musicians, singers, step dancers and cloggers/tap dancers.
Told through music, story, dance and featuring an exquisite video, this multimedia performance is a celebration of the Irish immigrant’s impact on America and America’s impact on the Irish immigrant. This is Eileen Ivers at her most heartfelt—a seminal work and a slice of Irish-American musical history underscored by Ivers’ abiding passion and timeless grace.

Blues from Spain! - one of the biggest revelations of the year.
Two young swamp blues worshippers - Pedro de Dios Barcelo and Carlos Jimena - perform a chemical experiment by mixing the rusty-water-wheel chant of Hound Dog Taylor, the darkness of Skip James, the hypnotic rhythm of John Lee Hooker and R.L.Burnside, the madness of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the sweet sound of Tampa Red, the killer slide of Elmore James and the essence of Son House.
The combustion was immediate, but the flames soared completely out of control when Paco Luis Martos, the world grand Master of hand-carved coffered ceilings, appeared in the laboratory accompanied by a primitive bass, handmade with a zinc washtub, a wooden stick and a chainsaw string.
Rising up out of this fire, a diabolically addictive substance shaped by a snake-like, raw and dirty blues, zombie-love lyrics and an original and electr…

Portugal The Man - http://portugaltheman.com/
Portugal. The Man is an experimental indie rock four-piece centered around frontman John Baldwin Gourley’s abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley’s innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.

$12 advance; $14 door.
TICKETS MAY BE PURCHASED ONLINE @ETIX.COM OR AT PLAN9 RECORD STORE IN CARYTOWN OR AT THE DOOR
DAVID BAZAN - http://www.davidbazan.com/
Though songwriter Dave Bazan fronts the enigmatic rock band Pedro the Lion, his emotionally charged narratives, eye for telling detail, and mournful voice have more in common with J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories” or Flannery O’Connor’s “Wise Blood” than with the usual lyrical slant of popular music. Bazan is a gifted storyteller, weaving parables of spiritual conflict, suburban ennui, and personal surrender into magnetic, well-crafted songs.
HEADLIGHTS - http://www.headlightsmusic.com/
awe at how deftly the band employs bells, organ swells, orchestral flourishes and stacked, co-ed “oohs” and “aahs” for instant indie-pop bliss. Occupying territory well marked by both predecessors (Lush, Stereolab) and contemporaries (Stars, Asobi Seksu), Some Racing, Some Stopping’s 10 tracks nonetheless stand out via good taste and attention to detail.

American pianist Jeremy Denk is one of today's most compelling young artists. In 1998, he took first prize at the Young Concert Artists international auditions and received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and his career has continued to flourish during the past decade.

Ben Folds - http://www.benfolds.com/
Over the last 15 years, Ben Folds’ first-class melodic gifts, irony-laced lyrics, and punk-rock tendency to play piano as if it were a contact sport have earned the North Carolina native a legion of devoted fans of all ages. The album, Folds’ third solo studio release, is dominated by the kind of irresistible hooks and piano-pounding pandemonium that listeners haven’t been treated to since Folds’ years with his previous band, the platinum-selling Ben Folds Five.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater @ Carpenter Theater
Presented by the Modlin Center.
“The Ailey dancers are known for their virtuosic technique, explosive movement, and limber physiques, with loose-jointed extensions that scrape the ceiling. They nail the blistering spins, the jump turns that corkscrew midair, the leaps that seem to sail on a breeze. It's a polished, spirited performance.” – Boston Globe
For the first time in its 50-year history, the acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater brings its dazzling artistry to Richmond. Founded in New York City in 1958, the Ailey Company, known as “America’s Cultural Ambassadors,” has forever changed the perception of American dance. The ensemble, now led by artistic director Judith Jamison, has performed for an estimated 21 million people in 48 states and in 68 countries on six continents, including two historic residencies in South Africa.
The company has earned a reputation as one of American culture’s most distinguished world ambassadors by promoting the uniqueness of the African-American experienc…

This internationally acclaimed satiric comedy by Jean Giraudoux, written during the Nazi occupation of Paris, is a surprisingly timely play. Venture capitalists trample over rich and poor alike. Oil fuels war. Greed is good. Sound familiar? The Madwoman of Chaillot is a delicious fable about filthy-rich and corrupt wheeler-dealers who think they have discovered oil under the heart of Paris.
They're willing to destroy the city to harvest the black gold. But their plans are foiled by a marvelously eclectic band of Bohemians, beggars and slightly daffy street-folk. An incredibly funny and moving play filled with hope and light, and with a very contemporary bite!

Tea Leaf Green - http://tealeafgreen.com/
In times past, you could run away and join the circus or ride the freight trains, and Tea Leaf Green offers the same seductive pull to today's kids. Sharing some of the style and substance of musical contemporaries My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother, and the Raconteurs, Tea Leaf Green conjures the spirit of bands like '70s Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and The Grateful Dead, taking classic sounds and giving them a present-day polish. Tea Leaf Green reminds us at every turn just how alluring rock 'n' roll can be.

TICKETS: Adult: $15; Senior (65+)/Student: $12; UR Employee / Alumni: $12; Child (0-12): $6; UR Student: $10.
