Brews & Blues w/ Dirty Truth at Capital Ale House

After work Blues and Brews. Free. Dirty Truth - http://www.myspace.com/thedirtytruthband From “alternative-blues” to “progressive-southern-rock” The Dirty Truth defies genre categorization. The band sees itself as an honest American rock band with obvious blues roots and a classic-rock sound --peppered by a witty lyrical edge, nasty funk-undercurrent and lightly salted by sweet soul and southern drawl. The guitars are big and thick and the rhythm section is fat and juicy. The Dirty Truth jams, but that is not what they are here to do. The Dirty Truth is here to write, record and perform songs. The jammin’ is just a bonus, or as they say in Louisiana: langiappe- a little somethin’ extra for nothin’. Friday, September 3, 2010, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM. 623 E. Main St. Richmond, VA. Rod Picott and Amanda Shires at Ashland Coffee & Tea

Rod Picott and Amanda Shires – A yankee singer-songwriter and a Texas fiddler might seem an unlikely pairing but the natural chemistry between Rod Picott and Amanda Shires is undeniable. Rising from the sun-driven plains of West Texas is fiddler and singer/songwriter Amanda Shires and from the northern mill towns of New England is Rod Picott. In the summer of 2007 Rod assembled some of his favorite musicians and recorded another album Summerbirds. Maverick magazine called Summerbirds “as damn near perfect as you can get” and gave the album a full five star review. Amanda Shires and Rod Picott met at the Folk Alliance Conference in Austin Tx. in 2006. Over the following 2 years they toured throughout the States and Europe playing more than 150 shows together. In the winter of 2008 they began co-writing and recording their debut duo project, titled “Sew Your Heart with Wires” . The album is a completely acoustic recording featuring only their two voices, Picott’s guitar and Shires’ fiddle and Ukulele.… Saturday, September 4, 2010, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Dangermuffin at Ashland Coffee & Tea

Sometimes a band sticks in your mind like good batter sticks to your ribs. A memorable name helps, and Dangermuffin is no pushover of a moniker. But it’s the round-the-fire looseness, yet still polished groove, that leaves the Charleston-based trio’s catchy hooks lingering in our ears. Together just two years, they’ve toured their raspy Southern style as far as Colorado’s Jazz Aspen festival and become Carolina public radio favorites. Dangermuffin is delicious from the first bite, but be certain to give a closer listen to the depth of songwriter Dan Lotti’s lyrics. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 day of show Visit their website : http://www.dangermuffinmusic.com/. Wednesday, September 8, 2010, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Railroad Ave. Ashland, VA 23005. Pattern Is Movement at Plaza Bowl

"It takes special musicians to make a sound like this work, but three LPs into their career, Thiboldeaux and Ward seem to have it figured out, creating an accessible album that nonetheless sounds unlike anything any other band is doing." - Pitchfork [7.9 rating] PATTERN IS MOVEMENT - http://www.myspace.com/patternismovement Following their first three records, endless shows and tours (among them dates with friends St. Vincent, David Bazan, and The Forms), and the transition from five-to-four-to-three-to-two members, Pattern is Movement turned themselves inside out and made the record we‘ve all been waiting for: All Together. Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward embody the two-man wall of sound; it‘s music that‘s been a long time building, rising out of the ether of left-behind evangelical childhoods (see Jesus Camp), best friendship (kindled as kids listening to The Chronic), and life in Philadelphia. All Together continues the mysterious narrative of the band, both documenting and foretelling the pou… Friday, September 10, 2010, 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM. 523 E. Southside Plaza Richmond, VA. Sons of Hippies at the Triple

$5. • Sons of Hippies - http://www.sonsofhippies.net Sons of Hippies are a psychedelic/punk trio whose sound is driven by lush layers of dreamy guitars and swoony vocal harmonies. Earthy beats bring you down to earth, while soaring guitars and synths take you elsewhere. Kelly mesmerizes crowds with that certain smoky, slightly spooky sexiness of Patti Smith and other female singers who can pull off strength and mystery without excess. eighth blackbird: Powerful at Modlin Center

"Friendly, unpretentious, idealistic, and highly skilled." — The New York Times "Music is, by its very nature, essentially powerless to express anything at all." Composer Igor Stravinsky's provocative statement questions the value, meaning and power of art. This season, Grammy-winning ensemble eighth blackbird tests this statement in two highly contrasted, fascinating programs that each take an extreme stance on the issue. The first program, Powerful, is inspired by an angry rebuttal of Stravinsky by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe: "Art for art's sake is just another piece of deodorized dog s***," and confronts the audience with passionate, politically-charged music. American composer Frederic Rzewski chose a letter by Sam Melville, a political prisoner who would soon die in the violent Attica prison riot, to lob his musical grenade, Coming Together; while John Corigliano's Mr. Tambourine Man is a setting of war-soaked song texts by Bob Dylan—the U.S. premiere of this piece will feature special gue… Wednesday, September 15, 2010, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM. The Blue Dogs at Ashland Coffee & Tea

With nearly a million miles logged and 100,000 records sold, South Carolina’s BLUE DOGS continue to ride the highways, churn out new music, and win over new fans. Founded initially as a part-time love affair for writing and playing music, the BLUE DOGS spent the better part of the early 90’s honing their songs and live show at venues throughout Mid-Atlantic. Although the band has grown a legion of fans over the years, the BLUE DOGS’ musical diversity has been difficult to classify. Having started as a bluegrass/country/folk-rock duo, and then with the advent of a full band in 96, the BLUE DOGS found themselves with echoes of bluegrass, jam band rock, commercial roots pop/rock, and Americana….somewhere to the right of Americana and left of mainstream Nashville. He now joins many independently minded artists of today by releasing his own records. Throughout his career, Miller has attracted favorable press notices. No Depression observed, “Probably too smart by half for his own damn good, Scott Miller straddles the cerebral and the visceral.” Added the Washington Post, “In addition to his considerable talents as tunesmith, Miller has two things going for him: a voice gruff enough to suit the music he loves and a personality lighthearted enough to keep the performances from dragging.” And the Nashville Scene summed it up: “Miller stays in touch with his inner rebel while alternating between hillbilly folk and spitfire garage rock that tried to ignore how well-crafted his songs are.” Tic… Friday, September 17, 2010, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. 100 N. Their songs are full of rich, rural details: frozen lakes, swaying trees, highway lights glowing in the deep night. Add to the mix baleful brass and trembling percussion, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for Gothic Americana.” – Rolling Stone “The literate angst and spare, elegant sound of 2010’s Deadmalls & Nightfalls, powered by a handful of acoustic instruments… and some tactfully applied horns… suggests a middle ground between the Palace Brothers and Sufjan Stevens, but the effect feels more like the shared experiences of Midwestern brethren than any conscious borrowing, and Milia and his bandmates give this… Friday, September 17, 2010, 9:00 PM – Saturday, September 18, 2010, 12:30 AM. 1621 W.
