Team Science Skill Series - Fall 2021Multiteam Systems Presented by- Marissa Shuffler, Ph.D. from Clemson University
Given the size and scope of today’s societal grand challenges, scientific research collaborations are increasingly comprised of not one single team, but instead a system of teams that must work interdependently and across boundaries in order to achieve shared goals for addressing such challenges. As a result, individuals operating in these multiteam systems (MTS) will need to collaborate both within their own team as well as with members of other teams, which places a greater emphasis on disciplinary dynamics as well as structure and dynamics of each component team. As a result, there is a significant need to not only train researchers on the benefits of an MTS work structure, but also raise awareness of best practices in cross-team communication, coordination, and leadership, in order to maximize science team and MTS effectiveness. To address these needs, the goal of this workshop is to help interdisciplinary researchers understand coordination and teaming dynamics from an MTS perspective, as well as to provide practical guidance and recommendations for interventions that may help to facilitate cross-team functioning.
By the end of this workshop, attendees should be able to: (1) define and describe cross-team dynamics and their role in multiteam system research collaborations, (2) summarize key advantages and challenges of working across teams in a multiteam system research collaboration, and (3) identify tools and interventions that can facilitate cross-team functioning and combat common barriers to success for multiteam systems.
