Purpose: In this case-based presentation, participants will explore Islamic beliefs and practices which impact healthcare for Muslim patients. Attitudes common among health and illness among diverse Muslim communities will be discussed. While this presentation will address issues specific to the American Muslim community (prayer, fasting, gender relations, death and dying, sexuality etc.), general principles of approaching all patients with cultural humility, maximizing their autonomy, and recognizing the diversity within any community will be emphasized.
