Friday, October 20, 1 p.m. – Saturday, October 21, 2023, 3:30 p.m. EDT
On Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21, the Smithsonian Science Education Center will host a professional development focused on studying socio-scientific issues and applying culturally-based pedagogies in the classroom. This two-day workshop will focus on defining and assessing socio-scientific issues for individuals and connecting them to their community, their country, and the world. This professional development opportunity will address the student experience of understanding how local challenges can evolve and connect to global challenges—we aim to give students access to resources and artifacts that illustrate these challenges including everyday objects that can be broken down scientifically and understood in a multitude of perspectives.
