Saturday, June 21, 2025, 1 – 3pm PDT

Participants will learn approaches to collage, with artworks being created around mixing visual media with text that interpret and transpose haiku into collage pieces.

You will be encouraged to write one (or more!) of your own spontaneous haiku for the project. Your short poems will be anonymously distributed to other participants and used as creative prompts for others in the greater Los Angeles area and other communities.

The pieces will be documented and published as a small book, bringing together the diverse meanings and experiences of those who participated. The book serves to document of what can result from practicing an engaged, curious, playful mindset.

Transfer your knowledge and skills in collage by making connections to other tools within our Fab Lab. We’ll briefly demonstrate setting up and using the lab’s button maker and making a small journal and designing the cover using our collage skills.

About the artist
Joe (JT) Bruns (he/him) is an interdisciplinary artist, activist, and educator based in Los Angeles, CA. After earning a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, he pursued a degree in urban art education. Bruns has exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions and is the founder of a group collective, Lost & Found, which self-publishes artist books and zines. He is currently a teaching artist within several local non-profits. His approach as a teaching artist is rooted in social practice and uses collaboration and connection to inform powerful and individualized experiences. He believes everyone participating embodies a role to enhance our collective experience resulting in exponentially more impactful outcomes due to the community we develop through openness and expansive approaches. https://www.jtbruns.com/
