Networking helps build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships in your professional communities. However, as work, conferences, and trainings move to online platforms, engaging in conversations with colleagues and peers can feel more challenging, from handling technical difficulties to getting yourself heard. During this virtual workshop, you will practice strategies to help you transition your networking skills to various online scenarios.
In this interactive workshop, you will compose and rehearse various ‘conversations’ in which you clearly, effectively and persuasively talk about your work and your skills with confidence and enthusiasm.
You will learn how to clearly identify your goal and your audience to tailor your modified ‘elevator speech’ to specific scenarios, use conversational strategies to connect with others, apply vocal dynamics (volume, pace, emphasis) to keep your audience engaged. In addition we will cover strategies to respond to common issues in an online platform such as pauses, false starts, overlapping, freezes – all so that you can confidently continue your networking online.
This workshop will be delivered through zoom, facilitated by Peggy Wagner, an instructor in the English Language Support Program. Peggy has extensive experience teaching professional communication skills to international grad students, post docs, and professionals.
